If they want to help the rebels, strikes at Syrian military bases are the worst way to do that, because that gives Assad the chance to claim that the rebels are "lackeys of the Zionist entity".

If they want to help Assad, the worst way they can do that is by pissing the guy off.

And they hardly have anything to gain by just stirring shit up...because that will come back on them in the end.

Does anybody have any theory about this that makes sense to them?

Either way it won't accomplish anything, but I do not agree with your assessment. Assad is just fighting for his survival, and whether he says Israel is the rebels allies or not won't make any difference, since they are not

being shipped to Hezbollah in Lebanon. It has nothing to do with US or Syria, in spire of being the target.
