You know who the real heroes are?

It's those brave souls who complain about anyone else who gets labelled a hero. Regardless of circumstances, you can always count on courageous internet busybodies to tell you why the person who risked his or her own safety isn't really all that heroic. And they have a whole array of rationalizations to explain away any act, no matter how heroic it might seem to the uninitiated.

Rescued a bedridden octogenarian from a burning building? Hell, he's no hero; he's a firefighter. That's his job!

Delivered a baby in the back of a taxi? Hell, she's no hero. She's a cab driver who was in the right place at the right time.

Took a bullet for a civilian? Hell, she's no hero. She's a cop. That's her job! And she's probably a racist, fascist bully.

Dragged an unconscious, wounded soldier from a destroyed Humvee? Hell, he's no hero. He's a soldier, and we shouldn't be in Afghanistan in the first place!

Helped free a woman kidnapped and held captive for a decade? Hell, he's no hero. He's an ex-con who doesn't look or talk like a professional spokesperson!

I draw great comfort from the fact that, no matter how shitty or uncertain the world becomes, there are always plenty of fearless hindsighters eager to diminish the actions of anyone who might try to make one part of it a little brighter.

Fight on, brave bloviators. Fight on!

E.g. "XYZ politician needs to SHOW LEADERSHIP by calling out the Republicans as the greedy psychopathic traitors they are. That way they will surely prevail in the second most conservative district in Texas."

Folks who never lift their fingers off the keyboard neither qualify as heroes or have the right to say who is or who is not a hero.

There are those who live to criticize anyone who receives praise for his or her actions. That is their legacy...negativity in the face of people actually taking some action of benefit to others. No matter how laudable those actions may be, they will seek tirelessly to find something with which to denigrate the actor.

We live in a free country that grants people the rights of free speech and free thought. Regardless of whether or not a person lifted their fingers off of a keyboard they have the right to question if certain people are heroes.

Not everyone who questions if a person is really a hero does so just to be mean. There are some people who believe someone should not be called a hero just because they did the right thing.

You're welcome to your opinion, but I'll just ignore it, if you don't mind.

Personally, I use the word "hero" sparingly, but I don't actively denigrate people that some call heroes. Those who do are generally not people I respect. The right to decide who is and who is not a hero is a right that is earned. I'm not talking about constitutional rights. I'm talking about ethical rights.

I am not a hero, so I do not get to define who is and who is not a hero. If you are one, you would probably be too modest to make that definition.
