Those teabagger idiots applied for tax free status then used it to funnel millions to teabagger candidates or ads in the last election. That they investigated them based on key words seemed to make sense to me.

now he's waste-deep in muddy water and the alligators are nipping his toes, and I'm not convinced he sees the problem.

He could have cleaned house and had a clear path for his appointments before 2011, but noooooo. Now we can't fill major cabinet posts without the GOP throwing a hissy fit or getting a possible senate seat out of it.

No way could he have drained the swamp as you say. this was a gop plan all along and they knew what they were doing when they did it. Many of us here knew what they were doing then too.
Obama's kinda fucked if he does or doesn't, either way many here are going to be calling for his head. It sucks
but then again many of the folks who were here back then are no longer posting. Sometimes I think I know why that is.

I want him to hold a press conference and discuss the refusal of the ReTHUGs to hold hearings for the EPA appointee - it is fugging sabotage but M$Greedia isn't covering that

I remember hearing a good explanation of the many reasons why a new, incoming president simply cannot "wipe the slate clean" at all of the many federal agencies. Changing or reversing existing rules at many agencies is subject to statutory requirements. Personnel changes are often subject to government service employment rules.

Bush and his cronies packed the agencies for eight long, miserable years with true believers and ideologues. They were very good at it and approached it with deliberation and forethought. Unlike today's Republican Party, the Democrats were encumbered by civility and good form and allowed it to happen.

By removing their veneer of legitimacy, he let them rest while playing 10 dimensional chess where he has clearly been out played. End result? Obama hamstrung, little progress, Bush tax cuts still in play.

In which case, those employees have civil service protections, and nobody can just walk through their offices and fire them out of hand.

Are you referring to departments where the GOP is refusing to let the Obama administration fill positions? In that case, nobody can fill those vacancies, and someone has to do the jobs -- possibly people originally hired or appointed by the previous administration.

Obama is not a magician.

There was a commissioner, Douglas Shulman, who was appointed by the Bush/Cheney administration five years ago, and who was in charge when the agency began treating conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status unfairly. It's unlikely that a Republican deliberately targeted groups on the right for extra scrutiny.

But more to the point, Rubio's demand is problematic given the fact that Shulman has already resigned, leaving the IRS last November. It's tough for a guy to fall on his sword after he's already packed up his stuff and gone home.

President Obama hasn't even nominated his replacement, and if he had, Rubio and his colleagues likely would have filibustered his or her confirmation anyway.
