It was as though if you wanted to attack Obama based on republican talking points on all three
of the current controversies and spice it up with humor, Leno accomplished that tonight..
The low information viewers who watch Leno have had their questions answered by lenos humor.
Theses are 3 situations which the White House is covering up..
Makes me sick, because this is really serious and the 2014 election verbiage is gonna start boiling soon.. I wonder how many listened to Jay tonight and jumped to the wrong side of the issues..

Both have teams of writers that provide their material. I think the beef is that one comedian says things you folks don't like, and the other says things you do like. That's all. Frankly, I don't pay much attention to either of them.

(31,706 posts)...I doubt Mrs. Leno (a very liberal lady) listens to the tripe that spews from Jay's yapper. The problem is this monolog and similar other ones get played around on "legitimate" news shows and channels and others pick up on the jokes. It was late night comedians who did more to hurt Clinton than any politician did. It's not that the moron at work will start saying how Obama is spying on the press or was responsible for Benghazi...it's the jokes of ineptitude or aloofness that will pass to a broader audience.
Summer Hathaway
(2,770 posts)he plays to his audience. And his audience is older, white, and Republican.
That's a dying (literally and figuratively) audience - which is why Leno's contract is not being renewed, and he is being replaced.
While his network has seen the writing on the wall - and reacted to it - the GOP has not.

In total viewers, Leno has out-delivered Letterman for 21 weeks in a row and all 10 weeks he and Kimmel have competed versus one another.
Leno is getting kicked out for a spat with the NBC executives. They are going to try and replace him with Jimmy Falon (who does not compare to Conan) and he's going to have the same experience Conan had. They will keep him for a few months then they will bring Leno back.
Maybe if they replaced him with someone good like Tina Fey on the other hand

(11,464 posts)Letterman's meager audience is almost all male, and he treats women as if he was part
of the ratpack days. Like dirt.
And his stunts over the years with the regular workers/owners of the small stores around him(though most of them were long ago bought out as their stores were purchased) showed his true colors around minorities. Treated them as lauging stock making fun of their speaking voices and all.And they were forced to take it and play along.
Jay Leno is a democratic liberal. He is equal opportunity on his jokes, and he is going out as he started #1.
He has kept Johnny Carson/Ed McMahon's audience/base.
NBC made a major mistake with the very untalented to be a host (but great writer) Conan
and they are making another mistake with Jimmy Fallon, who is not ready for prime time hosting (he is a terrible interviewer, and the only thing he does well are song parody, which he does very well) but his after monologue stuff also stinks.
I will take Jay's headlines, Jay's Jaywalking, and I love that Gas Station TV bit.
I know Jay owns both the headlines and Jaywalking, so when Jay gets a job on a different station one will still be able to see those.
This is, by the way, just what is wrong in America-
they throw out someone because he is a little old, and replace him with one of them
me me me me generation as Joel Stein wrote about in Time Magazine.
BTW, you know all those lousy movies Lorne makes with different SNL people over the years.
That is what will happen with Jimmy in NYC produced by Lorne.
Be prepared for a lot of fart jokes and distasteful stuff like SNL does.
IMHO
and I have a sneaky feeling Letterman is not long for the tv world.(they should have fired him a few years ago after "that" incident.)
The 11:30 talk show is suppose to be a certain type. People are looking for lite humor and easy non stressful stuff before nodding off to sleep.
They are not looking for heavy political stuff and the zingers are equal opportunity.
But I do get that there is a professional publicity anti-Leno campaign for years.
Why?
Sheer jealousy by the others. When one is on top, everyone under always hates them.
But each of them(much like the alt-media) would sell their left foot to be them.
And when thinking about Conan, remember something- Conan kicked George Lopez out.
Conan's fans blamed Leno for doing that to him, then Conan did the exact same thing he was angry at to George.
Conan stunk at NBC at 1130. Much worse stink than even Chevy Chase.
NBC should have gone big and different if they were going to dump Leno while he is the #1 and not Jimmy Fallon.
Say Amy and Tina (though Tina refused because she has no time).
Do something different.
(and I fear the Letterman replacement will also be the same old same old.)

(13,409 posts)Your special kind of performance art just seems to mesh so well with his "humor". Maybe wealthy liberals can buy out Leno's contract for decades to come so the world will never have to be without Leno's brilliant and not at all stale Clinton jokes, maybe he could even bring back the Dancing Itos.
Nope, that doesn't surprise me at all.

(11,464 posts)The Steve Carell movie on magic w/Jim Carrey got the old vs. new correct re:entertainment.
Jay is Johnny Carson, however, in 2013 not 1970. Same midcountry schtick.
And Jay is the #1 union person there is. He has taken care of his staff and they are all union workers.
When NBC fired him the first time (for that Godawful Conan) Jay made sure they were taken care of.
But headlines and Jaywalking are the best bits on any talk show since Carson's.
(sure is 100x better than those stupid thank you notes. Conan should have stayed on the Simpsons.
If NBC wanted to do something more modern, they should have hired Tina/Amy
(same like ABC should have kept Regis).

(13,409 posts)He's nothing but a right-wing, utterly unfunny, talentless, sell-out of a hack.
You can talk about his progressive bonafides all you want, he's a greedy, self-serving asshole who couldn't care less about the people who made him. There are lots of talentless folks on TV, but Leno is the only one who is painfully unfunny. When you have a whole crew of people writing for you and your complete lack of comedic timing assures that anything funny you say is entirely accidental, it's painful to watch. But he does a great job appealing to the lowest common denominator in this country. The country does need to get its daily dose of cringe worthy homophobic and Clinton jokes. Idiots need humor too.

(11,464 posts)Whereas Jay is keeping his rating he always had, there is no drop
Fox has dropped 40% or more and none of the others are passing Fox.
(which is why all political talk should disappear, it is just not profitable. They should go
to sports or other broader topics.)
Whereas combined, all late night is booming, which is why their are so made shows
of which Leno is far and away the #1.
If Leno went to the CW or Fox at 11pm, he would come in first place.
NBC btw was so bad recently in prime time, that Univision got higher ratings.
Only thing that saved NBC from total obscurity was Jay Leno.

Leno is the best comedian on late night followed in a distant 2nd by Conan. Letterman and Fallon both suck and Ferguson has gone down hill since getting his robot sidekick.

One of the 99
(2,280 posts)And there are many factors that can affect ratings such as channel position in local markets, signal strength, lead-in, etc.
Making an argument based on ratings is like saying FAUX is the best news channel because it has the highest ratings.
LostOne4Ever
(9,288 posts)When it comes to something that is as subjective as humor, the numbers are about all you have to go by. Unlike the fox example, this is not a debate about accuracy, or depth of story, or diversity of views, or anything like that. It is about who can make the most people laugh.
Further, both Letterman and leno have news as their lead in, CBS is kicking NBC's butt overall, They are both on the two biggest network channels. Further a 20% disparency in ratings is huge and can not be explained away by any of those factors (despite letterman either being equal to Leno or have an advantage).
This is all about taste and other people's taste have no affect on your own. It does not devalue your taste and vice versa. Leno makes more people laugh and thus is winning in the ratings war. You don't like Leno, fine dont like him. It does not mean that Leno is not as good as letterman as there are people who like leno and hate letterman. It means your taste are different.
I can't STAND letterman. He doesn't make me laugh. Leno does. Why is it so important to you to try and say my taste is bad? Especially as according to the the best quantifiable means of actually determining how funny they are shows that Leno makes more people laugh?
Again this does not mean that your taste are worse than mine, just different.
One of the 99
(2,280 posts)I never said your taste was bad. I'm just pointing out that ratings are not an indication of quality whether in be the quality of a news channel or of a late night talk show. FAUX News fans constantly make the argument that FAUX is somehow best because it has the higher ratings than CNN and MSNBC. The poster above was making the same argument about Leno. I just pointed out that it was the same faulty logic as with FAUX and that there were other measures of quality such as the Emmy awards. Then it was you who made the accusation that the Emmys has bad taste because they didn't agree with your personal taste.

It's what they historically do. They take current events and attempt to make humor of it. If it bothers you, I suggest you refrain from watching any/all late night until this all blows over and goes away.

Did you ever watch Letterman and Matt Damon together?, Hysterical.. Its like they are joined at the hip comedically.... Very kind of subtle and full of sarcasm and innuendo..
By the way if anyone watched Letterman last night, he was very measured with these subjects and
