Crews are looking for a missing nuclear gauge -- containing sealed sources of radioactive material -- that was lost May 3.
The Pennsylvania DEP, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and West Virginia state officials are searching Interstate 81 between mile markers 17 and 24, where it apparently fell off of a truck, the Department of Environmental Protection said in a press release.
Pennsylvania firm Valley Quarries Inc. of Chambersburg, Franklin County, is licensed by the DEP to possess and use the gauge. Staff members from the company said it was being used in West Virginia at the time it was lost.

"It is critical for anyone who has information about the lost nuclear gauge to contact the Pennsylvania DEP, Nuclear Regulatory Commission or a local law enforcement agency immediately," DEP Bureau of Radiation Protection director David Allard said. "As long as the device is not tampered with or damaged, it presents no hazard to public safety."

(44,576 posts)How big is it, anyway? Do we have to worry about somebody blackmailing the government against detonating it? I thought THAT only happened in James Bond movies!

(1,370 posts)The radioactive source is not nearly big enough to do much damage (dirty bomb).
The people who lost my it are in deep doo doo...it is supposed to be chained to the vehicle.
Btw its purpose is to measure the density of compacted soil as part of road construction.

(146,305 posts)for jebus sake. It is test instrument containing a small amount of radioactive material. These are widely used by industries of many kinds. It fell off a truck, and will be recovered shortly.
