Early in 2007 I asked about an eco-friendly mower. I bought a DU recommended Neuton CE 5. A few years later a larger model came out. I have really tried to wear out my mower, so I'd have an excuse to get the new larger model. On it's 7th summer with the two original batteries and it has never failed me. New blades are the only $ I've had to spend on it. No oil changes, filters, plugs, etc. And it cuts through the my thick zoysiagrass out front without ever bogging down. The high school kid down the street that mows lawns asked about it a couple years ago. He bought the CE 6 and hasn't had any problems, even with constant use.

There will come a day (looks like far off in the future) when I will step up to this:

Enjoy quiet, easy battery-powered mowing.
The Neuton CE6 Mower gives you the powerful performance of a gas mower with the convenience of battery technology. Its unique lightweight design means that making tight turns and maneuvering in small spaces is easy and strain-free. There is no gas or oil to spill and no engine emissions to pollute the air. With 360 watt-hours of battery energy, it has plenty of power to mow even tall, wet grass. The Neuton CE6 mower is ideal for mowing lawns up to 1/3 acre on a single charge. If you need more time, just drop in an optional spare battery and keep mowing!

(28,498 posts)It's now in the repair shop, but if it can't be repaired, I'll look into a Neuton!
Thanks, Omaha Steve, for the recommendation!

Made near my home, I have a Hustler diesel...,they are great mowers.

(16,038 posts)I gave $4500 for my 72" diesel used, they're $12k new..it cut my mowing time from 6 hours (36" Dixon) to about 3..The Hustler people give mowers to the non-profit healthcare company I work for, they gave them a Zeon last year..it's still running well..

(1,370 posts)With an extension cord. You had to plan ahead and be good at 'cord management', but it worked reasonably well, without all the hassle of storing gas, etc.
I guess this is next-gen...but I've got more yard than battery life.

(33,982 posts)Ridiculous how long my parent's lime green sunbeam, twin blade lasted. Something like 30 years.

(1,370 posts)But there was a place to coil the cord up right on the handle.
We would try to do long strips, back and forth...and uncoil cord as we got further away from the house. No going in big squares like I like to do with the gas mower. So We would do it in 4 sections (front yard, back, and two sides)...recoiling the cord between sections.
I thought it was a pain, but after firing up my dormant mower last weekend, and screwing with throttle adjustment, dirty filter, getting gas, and a dealing with a rusty spark plug wire...I'm starting to appreciate the electric.

(51,457 posts)had it all those years?

(99,632 posts)I bought an extra as part of an accessory package. Those original batteries are both still working on their 7th year. I charge them once a month in the off season. One got dropped. It cracked the case a couple years ago. It still charges up.
And I don't have to drain gas out of the tank at the end of the season....
It mulches (that is how I mow year round), bags, or discharges the clippings.

(53,061 posts)Reminds me of when I was in High School and my brother and I had lunch in a greasy spoon called "Moms" and had a sign saying it was just like home.
When we finished we loaded up the dishes and went to the back and washed them just like home.

We use it in our veggie garden that has a number of raised boxes,
but the paths between the boxes is too narrow for the big mower,
and a pain to clear with a weed eater.
This Reel Mower is just the right size.

The Push Handles do seem a little flimsy,
but the mower part itself appears to be robust.
Greenworks IS a Chinese Company,
but we couldn't find a Push Reel Mower made in the USA,
and after looking for two years at garage sales for one,
we finally bought from China.

A Little Weird
(1,754 posts)I have an Earthwise battery mower. It has been great although I'm starting to have problems with the battery (after 4 years). When I had a gas mower I always dreaded mowing - the noise, the smell, the hassle. Just getting the darn thing started was a workout. It might not work for a big yard, but an electric mower is the way to go for a small one. I had never heard of this brand, but will keep it in mind if I have to replace the mower.
