How many people are secret exhibitionists?

A few years ago, on a business trip to San Francisco, I had a sleepless night in a hotel, which isn't unusual for me. I sleep poorly in strange places. Knowing that nothing I did would let me sleep, I decided not to bother with it. I got a book and took a seat near the window, which was where the chair was located.

Across the way was the San Francisco Nikko Hotel, with room rates way over the amount available on my expense account. I did visit the outstanding sushi bar there, though, earlier that evening. As I read, I occasionally looked up. Here's the surprise: Almost every time I looked out my hotel window, there was someone in the Nikko naked in front of their window. A few times, more than one person was naked in front of the same window in the Nikko. I found it odd, somehow. As long as I sat there reading, this continued. Finally, I got drowsy enough to sleep.

Do people do this regularly? Is there something about a hotel room that brings out the exhibitionist in people? I don't understand the urge, frankly.

2. Hmm...I guess that's possible, but I doubt it.

Normally, I close the drapes before disrobing in hotels, as elsewhere. I understand optics, too, so I realize that windows are transparent when the interior of a room is lit.

I don't know. I wouldn't take photos, though, in that situation. I just found it interesting.

You might try "naked hotel window" in Google Images without the quotation marks. It could prove productive if that's your thing. Proceed at your own risk, though.

4. We need to educate the public on how interior lighting at night works.

My entire block, which consists of all apartment buildings 4-6 stories high here in NYC and no one uses curtains or blinds. I know they have them because I can see them tied up or pulled back but nope, everyone in a fishbowl.

6. Usually it's just some naked person, not an exhibitionist.

Plenty of people don't care if you see them naked.

If they're standing in front of the window doing a strip tease, taking bows, and blowing kisses to their audience (imaginary or not) then they are exhibitionists.

Otherwise they are just some random naked person who didn't bother to shut the curtains.

i think people are secret exhibitionists. all it takes is a sense of anonymity in general for people to rebel from the puritanical mores that still hold sway in the u.s.a.

maybe now that the fcc won't be fining networks for nudity on network t.v. there will less hand-wringing about the behavior.
