Worship and Admiration

The news about Angelina Jolie has caused a number of discussions about the blatant celebrity worship on DU. Are you fucking kidding me? The day there is blind worship on DU that will be a sign of the apocalypse. From what I can tell, the only threads that come close to worship are Kitteh threads(all animals) and those bringing good deeds to our attention. Snark also is a commodity much admired.

I don't worship Angelina Jolie or anybody for that matter. I do admire her and believe she tries to do a lot of good. Celebrity can be used in many ways. It can be used solely for promoting careers. That's all that some do. Jolie has chosen causes that need attention. It's a sad fact, but her involvement can bring more publicity to a cause than a lot of other efforts.

When she chose to make her decision about her mastectomy public in detail was astonishing. Many people won't talk about this to anybody but close friends or family. She opened a window to a very private decision and in doing so started a discussion that needed to occur.

Is she a hero? She herself has said no. Some do consider her one. IMO heroes are in the eye of the beholder. There is no set definition although some try to apply strict rules to govern the word. Who are we to tell anybody who can be a hero? My heroes may not hit anybody else's radar but that's fine. Their heroes may not register on mine. (There are some choices that do seem to stretch the word too far such as Ted Bundy worship or Hitler deification. Those are outliers that appeal to a very dark nature.)

I am also not going to throw shade on her for her celebrity or the money makes from it. That is a function of the value people place on others such as sports figures, celebrities, and others. Jolie at least appears to use some of it for good. She doesn't hoard it like those fat asses on Wall Street and those they serve.

Then there is the question of her using her charitable works to only gain positive attention. Really? She is going to get publicity no matter what she does. I doubt if she needs one ounce of the publicity for her causes. Jolie could act the fool or just make movies and get a boatload of publicity.

Jolie is a person who has made decisions that many applaud. It doesn't mean they worship her. There is a considerable difference between worship and admiration. People apparently need to learn what those words mean and when to apply them.

And I bloody well wish that people who try to control others and their decisions when they have no clue about what others have to endure would STFU! Men deciding rules for abortion without a care about what a woman experiences is execrable. That is just one example.

Now that I have I am going to go get some Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I do worship them.

Im no fan of Jolie (she's creepy and hey - I'm Team Jen!) - but there's nothing wrong with people who want to give her kudos . . . Kudos.

But she still gives me the creeps!

or their family members pass. Sadly, today is one of those days and I read all of the posts to Madfloridian and her family and not a one was contentious.
