(put in the wrong episode before)
I found "The Memory of War" to be far creepier than this movie, mostly due to the idea of having one's mind taken over in order to go on killing sprees. If I recovered from such a thing, I'd probably want to kill myself from the guilt.
Of course, we could take this idea of us all having that inner desire to kill/harm everyone else back to Forbidden Planet, as that unconscious desire (the Id) was what destroyed the Krell's civilization (with the help of the Big Machine.)

(29,414 posts)And all too often, Hollywood turns a good science fiction story into horror when it's not necessary.
The only "horror" I'll watch are the movies "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness"

(111,255 posts)and disposed of the whole thing within an hour. Dragging it out over 2 hours of gratuitous violence seems a bit much.
The problem with the premise is that most of us don't want to go out and kill our neighbors and set the business district ablaze, with or without laws against such things. The people who do want to do such things aren't confining it to one night a year.
It's a silly premise and likely an overlong movie that will appeal mostly to angry young people who blame anyone older than they are in general for the sick state of our economy.
Now if the purge targeted the rich side of town and the banks instead of each other in their own neighborhoods, they might have something.

You know the world is a big place and I don't always agree with or even understand what I see. But in that video I don't see anyone getting slapped around, knifed, shot or cryin' and so I can't say I can find much to condemn...and maybe saw a few things to praise or at least learn from.

(31,011 posts)That's why I want to see it. This is compelling to me.
Of course, if it only focuses on one family and policy isn't affected, I don't understand what the point might if all we see is the violence.
I enjoy moral dilemmas and this one has a lot of promise, but if it goes in the direction you believe it might, I might not like it.

(24,461 posts)Is this movie out to teach something or provoke discussion? America's addiction to war, bullying, abuse, violence and anger needs to be quelled.
Despite Quentin Tarantino declaring that gratuitous violence makes "great cinema", I can use a little less of this in my life, thanks.

(3,220 posts)Those "home invasion" movies are all the same. If you've seen one, you've seen them all.
Hollywood tends to take good ideas and waste them.

(31,011 posts)It's a government sanctioned crime spree where anything goes so that the rest of the time they can keep their "perfect society" intact. This society was engineered by a morally repugnant act.
I find it compelling which is why I want to see it.

(114,904 posts)how on earth would a government sanctioned one night a year crime spree lead to a a perfect society the other 364 days? Ridiculous.
And yeah, it's just a tarted up home invasion movie.
You are reading waaay too much into this piece of shit.

(18,184 posts)Plus it's just another "siege" movie, that's already been done with zombies/vampires/gangsters etc.
Maybe the twist at the end is that the victims make use of the "purge" law to become the aggressors...but there are other more subtle ways to play out the moral dilemma scenario.

I don't like the idea of reframing children as adults.

That is, while all that violent crime is taking place, the hackers get busy tapping into the financial networks to empty and redistribute all of that wealth, leaving some nasty AI-like viruses behind, and heading on to the federal government itself.
The "annual crime spree" would stop not long after that
