Chicago Just Carried Out The Biggest Round Of School Closings In American History

The Chicago school system, the nation's third largest, is in big financial trouble, with a billion dollar deficit coming up, falling enrollment, and a recent massive teacher strike over a contract dispute.

Now, MSNBC reports, after a heavily protested meeting where multiple people had to be thrown out, the Chicago Board Of Education voted 4-2 to close 49 schools and one high school program in the largest round of school closures that a single American city has ever attempted.

My daughter's school is not closing, that's for sure: affluent neighborhood on the North Side.

Indeed, they may build an extension.

it`s going to be a big problem when these schools close and the children are placed at other schools. they tried this a few years ago and a death of a student made national news. the statistics of violence these children face during the school years is dreadful. now the city is pledging police and firemen to protect the students who have to cross gang turf. i doubt that will do much good because the violence within the school building is another problem that will be made worse.

the concept of neighborhood schools is a thing of the past for the parents and the children.

have to travel through very dangerous neighborhoods to attend other schools

How would you like to have your kids have to travel through gang territories?

Rahm Emmanuel - such a guy - pathetic

I hope that the teacher's union lady (can't think of her name) runs against him and wins
