"SNIP......................
While Republicans are busy comparing everything President Obama does to Watergate, theyre not only showing their complete lack of historical knowledge, theyre also ignoring the remarkable decline of their party.
In poll after poll, the percentage of adults who identify with the Republican Party continues to decline. (See the red line in this chart.) Today 3.5 percent fewer Americans identify with the GOP than in November of 2008, when the incredibly unpopular George W. Bush was still in office and President Obama had just been elected in a massive landslide.
A new CNN poll also finds that the Republican Party now has the highest unfavorable rating in the 20-year history of that poll.
There are a number of explanations for why the GOP is getting less popular every day. The most positive spin is that the party is experiencing growing pains as Republicans in Congress are making progress on one of the partys top outreach priorities immigration reform.

they don't always act in the interest of increasing their numbers. in fact, quite often they don't. they're individually motivated mostly just to keep their own jobs, then secondarily to have enough power so they can effectively please their benefactors. a majority is certainly a big help in this, though it's not always necessary.
in any event, republicans in congress control much of the dialog for the republican party, and that has a basic selection fallacy to it -- you're looking mostly to the views of the survivors; whatever they did before worked, so they're not the likeliest engines of change.
I don't know exactly what you mean, but there were about 8 republican House members who lost their seat to democrats in 2012.

(52,489 posts)that's the problem. if there were republicans who learned any lesson, it's the ones who are no longer there, no longer in a position to influence the dialog.
the ones who are in a position to influence dialog are the ones who WON in 2012.

By all appearances as well as their own insistence of failing to tune in to reality,I'd guess they'll reach that conclusion some miles beyond the point where they've relegated themselves to near oblivion, which can't come soon enough.
