Buddhist mobs attack Muslim homes in Myanmar, one dead

"Religion is for people afraid of going to hell. Spirituality is for people who have been there."

(Reuters) - Security forces struggled to control Buddhist mobs who burned Muslim homes on Wednesday for a second day in the northern Myanmar city of Lashio in a dangerous widening of ultra-nationalist Buddhist violence.

Scores of young men and boys on motorbikes and on foot marauded through the city of 130,000 people, some singing nationalist songs, a day after a mosque and religious school were torched.

State television said a mosque, a Muslim religious school and a number of shops were gutted by fires started on Tuesday by Buddhists who rampaged after hearing reports of a Muslim man setting a Buddhist woman on fire and badly wounding her. State media said calm had returned by Wednesday.

Myanmar, where Muslims make up about 5 percent of the 60 million population, has struggled with the unrest since June last year when fighting between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya erupted in western Rakhine State.

There are NO peaceful religions. Just ones with a better PR machine.

I'd suggest that there might be a number of peaceful religions. Sadly enough, they're followed by a bunch of violent shitwits that reflect poorly upon those religions.

Broad brush aside, that is.

You post this story and that's all you got from it, a pebble for your confirmation bias?

If there are 10,000 deaths from one religion and 1 from another...

Do we conclude that ALL religions are violent or that some are MUCH more conducive to peace than others?

I am just so frustrated by all the people who are compelled to play the "My god(s) is (are) better than your god(s)" game by way of violence.

The crap has been happening for hundreds of thousands of years. It is getting old.

Blaming victims of violence rather than the perpetrators of violence is disgusting. Yr clearly unaware or uninterested in the situation in Myanmar or you wouldn't have come out with such a ridiculous comment.

For all of my lifelong interest in geography and geopolitics, I barely know anything about the place.

Not to mention, the whole violence from Buddhists thing is a shock to my American stereotypes about the religion.

One can actually hold no religious beliefs and see that the op is puerile.

Was this intentional? Another religious pie fight and you're advising an intellectual stretch...

and using 'puerile', to boot
