Cameron: Too much globalization and open borders, too little national sovereignty.

David Cameron: don't patronise 'little Englanders' worried by immigration

The Prime Minister said Britain should not turn its back on the world, but it should equally be “bold and unashamed” about pursuing the national interest when it comes to issues such as immigration and the European Union.

He said politicians have embraced globalisation too “enthusiastically” in the past by pushing for open borders and less national sovereignty. ... He said previous governments were too “too easily seduced by the rewards of globalisation and not alert enough to the risks” when it came to immigration and the EU.

In an apparent swipe at the UK Independence Party, he criticised those who “reject modernity” and say “stop the world, I want to get off”.

“Both these wrong-headed approaches - the rejection of the modern world and the un-questioning embrace of globalisation - they amount to different kinds of national timidity,” he said.

Cameron is trying to find some middle ground to the left of UKIP's "rejection of the modern world" and the EU. Immigration and the EU are big issues on the right in the UK.
