When you poll people on one single issue and exclude all the political baggage of the rest of the major issues floating around, you get results that may reflect true voter desires, but when you include identity politics into the greater scheme of things, you find plenty of voters who may answer affirmative to the question but will go ahead and vote for the Republican politicians who invariably would vote against the question.
