Just when you thought the Arizona legislature was out of bad ideas.
SB 1467, newly introduced in the Arizona State Senate, would force schools and universities to suspend, fine, and ultimately fire any teacher or professor who engage[d] in speech or conduct that would violate the standards adopted by the federal communications commission concerning obscenity, indecency and profanity if that speech or conduct were broadcast on television or radio.
For the first offense, youd get a one-week suspension without pay. For the second offense, two weeks. For the third, a pink slip. ...
... Youre violating the law if you engage in speech or conduct that would violate FCC standards .... If this law passes, it will be illegal for any person who provides classroom instruction in the state of Arizona to have sex.
Or pee.
Ever.

(7,932 posts)What do you expect from a state filled with old grumpy people who hate young people because they "didn't act like that when they where that age". In my opinion Florida has the same issue.

(3,596 posts)I am not opposed to reasonable review and approval of material used for younger children under say the age of 16. Maybe this needs to be extended through high school and give local school boards the ability to determine the appropriateness of certain materials. While this amounts to censorship I am not opposed to giving local communities control over what goes on in their public schools.
But......I am totally opposed to any censorship, by regulation, of materials used in colleges and universities. There may be "censorship" by way of university or departmental policy in terms of materials used to teach certain subjects but those should be taken by the faculty themselves based on the specific facts and conditions are their school.
Colleges and universities should be largely free from social strictures because by their very nature they are there to expose students to a broad array of information.

(6,086 posts)it is INDEED that crazy and hateful. It is the most FUCKED UP state I have EVER had the misfortune to visit and I can truly say that I HATE going there. The everyday people, by and large, are good and decent however, there are too many racist and kooky nuts there who are just hateful and unbalanced. So, appparently, it isn't the same place you remember from the 90's.
