What's the deal with all these websites that want your phone number

It seems every time I go online to purchase something or just sign up for a newsletter or chat site the damn business asks for my phone number. Why the hell would they need my phone number? Of course that is really a rhetorical question, as I know why. Still it is getting to the point that I can't even purchase a pair of shoes from e-retailer without having to give them my phone number. They say that they need the phone number in case there is a problem with my order and they need to contact me, but because every website already asks for your email address, why do they need to contact me via phone. Just email me if there is a problem. Sheesh. All these damn businesses mining phone numbers so they can sell them to creepy telemarketers. I know some will say that they could just do a reverse search with your address and get it anyway, but my number isn't listed in the phone book or online and that is my right. And besides even if it was, then let the telemarketers go searching. It should at least be optional to provide or not provide your phone number when all you want to do is make a purchase online.

Anyway just wanted to rant.
