In case anyone needs to be reminded why WalMart is a plague....

How disgusting that WalMart considers 11.75 an hour to be such a burden to its profit margin.

Walmart Threatening to Pull Plans for D.C. Stores

Walmart, Inc. is threatening to pull its plans to build three urban stores in D.C. if Mayor Vincent Gray signs a new living wage bill into law...

The company goes further in threatening to halt construction of three more D.C. store locations if the Large Retailer Accountability Act is passed by Gray...

...The LRAA would require "large retailers," whose retails stores take up at least 75,000 square feet and whose parent companies have sales of more than $1 billion, to pay wages no lower than $11.75 per hour. This would also include subcontractors working on the premises of the stores.

"The LRAA would clearly inject unforeseen costs into the equation that will create an uneven playing field and change the fiscal health of our planned D.C. stores," Walmart's statement reads....

Neither WalMart nor DC actually want the stores built, but neither can admit that in public because this was St. Tony's dream.

Finally, Wal-mart is the retail version of syphilis. Your town contracts wal-mart, slowly goes commercially insane, impotent, and sterile. The body of your workforce becomes weaker and weaker, making the ravages of wal-mart all the more severe. Then you pass it on to the next town. And each infected town in your states community of towns, drains resources from the parent community.

We have needed the protective legislation equivalent of a big penicillin shot in the ass for a long time.

The DC community will probably be better for it. I don't see a problem.

However, if consumers could hold all international retailers and the like to some wage standard I see good things.
