The whole deal with this NSA vacuum cleaner bullshit boils down to this:
You're not a suspect, IF it can be proven that no phone number you have ever called, or ever may call in the future, or ever calls YOU, can be associated, a thousand times removed, through cross-referencing, to a phone number belonging to a bad person, i.e. one your government (who has nothing but YOUR best interests in mind) has determined MIGHT be a "bad person" located in a "bad place".
Which means...
You are a suspect... UNTIL THE DAY YOU DIE.

(36,418 posts)the NSA has profiled. That's a lot of profiling, and it includes most American adults and one in six cell phone users in the world.

(55,981 posts)have data on all our Congress-critters? Can they influence legislation? Seems to me there are lots of questions to be answered.

So I call their bluff, and run anyway. I win. The first vote that comes my way is a 36" pipeline running right through the middle of my city carrying cyanide to make paper. I vote no. My phone rings in the middle of the night. I pick it up and the first thing hear is "shhhh... is anyone listening? Remember that porn site you visited in 2013?"

(6,918 posts)can get credit information on every member of Congress. Believe it or not, there's a government agency called the IRS that thinks it should know how much income you have and expects banks and employers to tell on you.
The IRS even tries to get those overseas banks that promised you secrecy to rat you out.
Ever notice those targeted internet ads, big corporation is watching you.

(55,981 posts)That is unless you want to be part of the cover-up. Republicans like Clapper, Mueller, Comey, and Alexander want to cover this up while many Democrats want to investigate farther. I stand with the Democrats.

Worse than wiretapping. A library of data to be retrieved later.
The magnitude of people that have access to this data is not entirely revealed. There is potential for any American in any position to be extorted and coerced by some mid level hack working for a private surveillance contractor, that happened to stumble upon some information unrelated to terrorism.
The Eric Snowden saga has revealed as much. How else can a man so low in the pecking order capture so much world concern? How can a man at this level cause so much "grave danger" to our nation's security? How many more are there, just like him, that have such access?
It has already blown up in the face of our President. You think he would get a clue.
Worse yet, the 1% will purchase information to coerce and extort politicians. Considering how much cheaper it is than Citizens United, you have to believe it is ultimately headed in that direction. Instead of laying out millions to bribe politicians, they can simply extort them for nothing. Those assholes will do anything for a buck. They will "take over" the operation like 1940's mafia and all they will have to do is bid on the contract to run it. Easy. In fact, I take back the statement declaring the 1% will purchase this information as we taxpayers, will instead, pay them to take this information.
The scope of information is too vast to keep it secure. It will take too many "employees" to manage it. It only takes one or two to turn this into a nightmare. I point to Eric Snowden as exhibit A.
There will come a day when a court or grand jury will subpoena NSA data for litigation unrelated to terrorism.
Storage is absolutely the showstopper.
Tear down that fucking server center in Utah already.
