Let's ban the word "gun" from DU
Instead, let's mandate the use of "shit multipliers" because that's what many, many guns end up being.
Black kid walking through your gated community? Add a nitwit with a gun and things get horrific. Drunk and pissed off at someone? Add a gun and it gets many times worse. Sometimes forget to put things back in their place? Leave a gun around with kids and it gets many times worse. Feeling depressed and at your wits' end? Add a gun and it gets many times worse. That's why fewer guns = fewer gun deaths. Henceforth, let's refer to to guns in a way that reminds us of their true essence: shit multipliers.

3. Meh. Lets ban all guns. Start with the military and police first (they are, after all, folks like us
just in different jobs). Then we can ban them from private security companies.
Or, I dunno, maybe we just want the few who control the many to own them? And perhaps they love spreading fear (like with 'terrorists') to further erode our rights? Naw, it's just folks like me and you that shouldn't be trusted. |

13. True. When my son was in Iraq we trusted him with a gun
When I was a cop people did too (well, deputy, same thing).
Only difference is the clothes people wear to some extent. See that same person with a gun, not and work, and have no idea what they do for a living we instantly judge them based on what less than 1% of people who own guns do with them. It's a bias thing. Me, you, others are not as equal as others because we don't trust our fellow citizens (unless they put on a uniform or a suit and tie). If a wealthy/famous person has armed body guards people think nothing of it. Poor person owns a gun and goes out two days a year hunting deer, he's bad. People in power love seeing us not trust each other. They profit off of it and still get to do the things they don't want to allow us to do (from skipping airport security lines to guns to being able to travel anywhere to get an abortion for themselves or a loved one...the laws are meant to apply to the many by the few). |

16. Why start with the military and police?
Why not start with the soft targets?
At #13, you mentioned airport security. Why not first compile a list consisting of a combination of (1) the names of those who own registered firearms and (2) the names of those who have willingly gone through airport security lines and gotten unwanted free feel-ups without objection? Start with them first. Then move on to the ones who didn't get free feel-ups but went to the airports anyway and were willing to take a chance on doing so. They too, would be softer targets. Much softer than the military and the police. And of course, much softer than the career criminals who deliver violence to get what they want and use firearms in their chosen professions. IMO, it's unlikely that those who want to take firearms away from everyone would actually show up to start with them first. |

18. Probably because they use their weapons more to harm people
From shooting at people in trucks (like when they were looking for dorner) to shooting up families in other countries.
The least threat we face is from fellow citizens who have obtained guns legally, so we go for the problem people first. |

23. More likely than not, those who would get behind such an idea would get far behind.
Even Bloomberg who opposes gun ownership and who plans on continuing with his unconstitutonal stop-and-frisk-without-probable-cause policy has the good sense to not actually get out on the streets and try that himself.

Have you crossed the line and are now willing to accept authoritarianism?
Or, maybe, accept authoritarianism "just this once"? For just this exception? Rationalwiki has a related post regarding the phenomenon of authoritarianism:
Will you be unhappy if there are old-fashion liberals such as myself who don't like following mandates and won't follow your proposed mandate? I've never been very good at following authoritarians. I won't start now. |

29. A year ago today
82 innocent people were shot, 12 people died from their injuries while watching a movie. This horrible tragedy could of been avoided! Zimmerman was allowed to carry a gun even though he had a violent past. Stand Your Ground or "shoot first" is evidence that these laws have awful consequences. Regardless, of what happened that night, it is a fact that Trayvon is dead because Zimmerman was carrying a gun.
How many more mass murders or children have to die before something is done?! We shouldn't have live in fear when we send our children to school that they could next. |

30. You used a combination of gun/guns NINE times in your OP
.
. . Once would have sufficed methinks. If you not want a word used, don't be one that uses it more than anyone else in one post. Now, on another cant - guns are a way of life for the USA - at home and abroad. If they cannot be discussed, there is no way the issue can be resolved. I don't think the rest of the 1/4 million people here on DU would have a friggen clue what a shit multiplier is. Certainly don't get the connection up here . . Rest of the World sure won't. CC |

Two feets they come a creepin' Like a black cat do And two bodies are layin' naked Creeper think he got nothin' to lose So he creeps into this house, yeah And unlocks the door And as a man's reaching for his trousers Shoots him full of .38 holes Mr. Saturday night special Got a barrel that's blue and cold Ain't good for nothin' But put a man six feet in a hole Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey And playin' poker on a losin' night And pretty soon ol' Jim starts thinkin' Somebody been cheatin' and lyin' So Big Jim commence to fightin' I wouldn't tell you no lie Big Jim done pulled his pistol Shot his friend right between the eyes Mr. Saturday Night Special Got a barrel that's blue and cold Ain't good for nothin' But put a man six feet in a hole Oh, it's the Saturday Night Special For twenty dollars you can buy yourself one too... Well hand guns are made for killin' They ain't no good for nothin' else And if you like to drink your whiskey You might even shoot yourself So why don't dump 'em people To the bottom of the sea Before some ol' fool come around here Wanna shoot either you or me Mr. Saturday Night Special Got a barrel that's blue and cold Ain't good for nothin' But put a man six feet in a hole Ooooh it's a Saturday night special And I'd like to tell you what you can do with it too... |

37. Agree with the value of specifying the language but not that one
Pistol or handgun works for a standard typical sidearm. Its also useful to separate terminology in rifles: hunting, sport, or assault. Caliber, make-model, and magazine capacity are also helpful. For example: a Ruger Mark III .22 LR, with a 10 round magazine, is very different from a Ruger .357 Magnum, revolver. I'm not saying I disagree with your sentiment, but I find it hard to take any firearm argument seriously with "shit multiplier."

41. I have a better idea. Way better.
Every time you're having a conversation regarding these things that invoke an irrational fear in you, stick your right index finger in your right ear, your left index finger in your left ear, and say "La La La La" FOUR times, no more no less. Then continue on as you were.
If you practice that many times you can make it happen naturally and with no hesitation whatsoever and you will become very popular amongst your friends who share this irrational fear. You may even become somewhat of a legend. |
