Douglas Bruce from jail: 'It's revenge'

DENVER - Friday night, Douglas Bruce spent his first night in jail after being convicted for tax evasion. While he has a change of scenery, he has not had a change of heart.

"It's boring. I don't see there's any public benefit to my being in an 8 by 14 cinderblock cell. I've asked for a Bible," Bruce told 9Wants to Know Investigator Kyle Clark in a jailhouse interview on Friday afternoon.

The request for a Bible came up no less than a half-dozen times during his interview with 9NEWS at the Denver City Jail.

Bruce, who authored Colorado's Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), is probably the best known limited-government conservative in the state. Now he must rely on the government for his clothes, his meals, his food, his bed and the roof over his head.

The downtown Denver lockup called Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center - I spent one night there after being arrested at Occupy Denver.

The food is not just horrible, but Lovecraftian. AND BRUCE GETS TO EAT IT FOR SIX MONTHS!!!

14. It's the shiny new jail, but it's still a jail, and the food was horrible.

All the money went into the high-tech security - the computer systems for the ever-present cameras (Bentham's Panopticon's got nothing on today's jails & prisons), the electronic doors, the video conference system for "visitations" (that's right, when you visit your jailed friends/family, they don't even let you physically see them - they sit him and you in front of a hardened computer terminal, and you conduct your visit by webcam.) and so on.

180 days in jail, 6 years of probation. Easy enough to revoke and sent back to a real prison to serve the rest of his 6 years.
