These knives make it onto planes in this country EVERYDAY undetected. Seems like a problem...

(1,156 posts)a) These knives are on planes everyday without incident and thus there is no problem
or
b) These knives aren't on planes every day but if there was there would be a problem.
Or are you just concerned that someone has something pointy in your vicinity?

(6,324 posts)They have steel blades, so they will set off the metal detector if carried on the person. And likewise they are very visible on the X-ray scanners your bags pass through.
So what, exactly, is this potential problem?

(383 posts)Perhaps they can't get into the cockpit, I don't know. I would say that crew and passengers could be affected negatively before a plane lands.
I'll leave it to you to figure out how.

(6,324 posts)And do you have any sort of reference to show that these make it through in any greater numbers than other knives with blades the same size? Or is this jut your assertion?
As I said before- it is steel. If any are making it onto planes it is 100% due to TSA ineptitude. A steel blade is a steel blade.

(7,720 posts)these knives are getting through airport security and into the cabins of airliners?

(464 posts)...I received both as a gift a few months back. I don't carry the knife, but the multi tool is very handy to have around. Especially the bottle opener and very recently I traveled on an airplane, and I put the multi tool in my checked baggage, to avoid any hassles. I love gadgets like this, as it let's me have a tool I might need in my wallet. Oh, how I wish it was socially acceptable for a man to carry a purse!

I hate having to carry a bag to hold my cards, keys and checkbooks (about all I carry). I'd much rather have designers stop whining about how pockets ruin the "line" of their clothing and just put the damned things in, already.
I don't care if they'd make my ass look wider. I lost that battle a long time ago.

(464 posts)....I guess the grass isn't always greener. And I have long thought that pockets on women's pants were useless, as nothing could fit inside of them.

(32,886 posts)being that if there is a terrorist takeover in the main cabin with knives, the pilots do not open the door to save crew or passengers.
Still of some concern, I agree.

(28,498 posts)But my favorite was the "Throw Your Voice" ventriloquist device:
I actually got one!
It was a small metal device, about the size of a .22 caliber shell, with two small metal reeds. You held it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue while you "talked." It sounded more like a little squeaky voice--what a cartoon Martian might sound like--than actually throwing your voice.
Can't imagine that device today, though: giving a small metallic object to children to hold in their mouth while speaking?

(16,191 posts)It was useful on a halfway regular basis. I lost it (along with the rest if my wallet) on a jog years ago, and hadn't found anywhere selling another one. The fact that it's free is awesome, but I really don't want to give my info to the NRA (and the site looks a little sketchy anyway), so I'm a bit torn right now...
And yes, I even carried it on a plane.

In which case, thank you for flying with Southwest, please don't block the restrooms, sir.

(8,747 posts)See some nutjob pull out a knife after 9/11? Do you think they're going to do exactly what the knife wielder tells them to do? Or are they going to rush said nutjob?

(6,324 posts)So if it makes it onto a plane it will be 100% due to TSA ineptitude.
But FWIW, there have been plastic "knives" on the market for about 3 decades now. Won't really cut or slice, but they can stab about a well as you can with a long metal ink pen. But even those show up on the scanners.

(8,636 posts)Ceramic blades are being used for kitchen knives and knives for other uses. Do a Google search for "ceramic tactical knives" or "ceramic combat knives!" Some of these are small enough to be easily concealed.
