At The Request Of Obama, Republican Senators John McCain And Lindsey Graham Are Headed To Cairo

At the request of President Barack Obama, Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham are headed to Cairo on Monday.

The Arizona and South Carolina senators respectively will meet with interim President Adly Mansour, Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and interim Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, said Egyptian foreign affairs spokesman Badr Abdelatty, reported by CNN.

McCain and Graham are expected to arrive in Cairo amid an international effort to defuse the crisis ignited by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's removal and subsequent political unrest. Morsi’s supporters have been demonstrating for more than a month causing instability and compromising the unity needed to move forward in a democratic process for new elections.

Graham made an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday outlining the reasons he and McCain are making the trip. "The Egyptian military must move more aggressively toward turning over control to the civilian population, civilian organizations. The military can't keep running the country. We need democratic elections,” he said. “The (Muslim) Brotherhood needs to get off the streets and back into the political arena and fight your differences there, and we need to put Egypt back to work. If this continues, it's going to be a failed state. That's why we're going,” Graham added.

Remarks by McCain early in July might have prompted the president to include John McCain on the mission.

Can't help but think there are other ancient artifacts that the Egyptians would prioritize ahead of these two, though

No, I mean these guys are the hawkish of the hawks when it comes to the Middle East. But no, I guess sending them into a volatile Middle Eastern country will turn out just splendid.
