Spreading Santorum: Slick Rick says Liberals are making YMCA showers uncomfortable

Next time you feel uncomfortable showering at the gym, blame it on liberals and their abortion rights agenda. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) does.

Speaking to anti-abortion group Students for Life after receiving an award last month, Santorum attempted to explain what he saw as an enthusiasm gap between liberal and conservative activists. During his speech, a clip of which can be seen above, via Right Wing Watch, Santorum argued that the pro-choice movement infuses passion about abortion rights into "every aspect of their life." He said that because of this, showering at a gym had become an "uncomfortable" prospect for students.

"They make it uncomfortable for students who come to Austin to shower at a Young Men's Christian Association, YMCA, gym, because they live it," he said. "Because they live it. They're passionate, they're willing to do and say uncomfortable things in mixed company. They're willing to make the sacrifice at their business because they care enough."

It's unclear if Santorum was literally suggesting that abortion rights activists talk about the issue in showers at gyms, but he quickly shifted to a different metaphor to highlight his belief that anti-abortion forces simply needed to be more resilient. .......................(more)

in fact, there's generally no talking in there at all. Either the Y that I go to is an anomaly where the hot-button issue of abortion is never discussed, or... maybe Santorum is just f*cking insane. Yeah, that.

how conservatives believe they have the right to bother people with their opinions, and everybody else's job is to shut up and listen. If you push back, you're oppressing them, you big meanies!

As anyone who knows the Christian right can attest, it’s really, really common for them to run around being aggressive, harassing and provocative, and when they are held accountable, to preen about how they’re being oppressed for their faith and isn’t this a free country and wah wah wah? One reason they do this is because they believe that’s what liberals do—that we routinely make up claims of sexism and racism so that we get our sexism/racism checks in the mail or something—and that justifies this blatantly dishonest behavior in their minds. It’s super ugly, and one reason that one should be wary of the “both sides” mentality in the media, because the behaviors in this case are absolutely not parallel. That’s why, when I read this, I immediately thought that what likely happened was that they went into the showers and started proselytizing, and when people understandably argued with them or asked them to take it elsewhere, they responded in an ugly fashion. We are, after all, talking about high school and college age conservatives—think James O’Keefe during his pimp videos and plotting to kidnap journalists days—so not exactly the most evenly tempered crowd.

make it look like he puked Pepto-Bismol down the front of his shirt?

I guess Santorum can still get sick to his stomach even if he himself is made of Santorum.
