Heres an example of the family values encouraged by the smear campaign that some religious conservatives are waging against the Girl Scouts:
A 10-year-old girl offering to sell cookies in Reston around midday on Jan. 14 was stunned and upset when an adult neighbor responded by denouncing abortion.
When the woman answered the door, she looked at my daughter and said, We dont support Girl Scouts because they support abortion, which kills babies, recalled Kim Douglas, whos been a troop leader as well as a Scout parent for four years.
It left my daughter very shocked, confused, Douglas said. She said, Mommy, something creepy happened to me.

All that woman needed to do was not answer her door. Period. The rest of her performance was a pointless, vulgar, offensive attack against a child.
but hey, the right wingers will say that the child deserved it adn that the woman was justified in verbally attacking her.

In my humble opinion it all started with the TV and radio evangelistic fanatics who soon join by the extreme right Wing lunatics spewing their political propaganda. I realize that there have been extremes in the past, but I don't believe that the nation was as polarized as it is today. Even at its worst there were voices of moderation that dampened the rhetoric of the demigods.

Most people were pretty polite, even those who politely turned him down (and it was a good lesson for him on how to handle rejection, which kids need to know), but once in awhile he'd get a grouch who couldn't just turn him down or not answer the door in the first place, but had to actually be rude about it. To a kid. I finally got pissed one time it happened (which fortunately wasn't often) and let the guy have it. Nationally, a self-described, Christ-centered alternative to Girl Scouts, called American Heritage Girls, says its membership has jumped from 13,000 in the summer to 18,000 today.
Most of it is from people leaving the Girl Scouts, said Patti Garibay, founder and national executive director of the 17-year-old group based in Cincinnati. It does seem like Catholic membership is growing quickly.

(20,993 posts)The Latter Day "Saints" have their claws into the U.S. variant of the world organization.
Here is the good news. Most troops don't press the issue. I spent the last 7 years as a BSA adult leader. There are as many liberals as there are conservative leaders and scout families. The organization iteself teaches pretty liberal values when you really examine it. Most troops don't make an issue. (I know of several gay Eagle Scouts.)
The real problem is the National Office took a deal that made the male youth programs for the LDS the Scouting program. In doing so, they allowed the LDS a lot of power in setting policy.
In short, I was basically clarifying:
Boy Scouts = Good
Boy Scouts of America National = LDS
Boy Scout Troops (mostly) = Good.

(6,670 posts)Your job: to tell which of three lines on a sheet of paper is longest. The differences are not small, the job is trivially simple. Everyone who is not blind can do it perfectly.
Now, everyone in the room but you insists, unanimously, that a different line than you chose is the longest. What happens?
About 25% say "so what? the line is as long as it is."
About a third waffle - they are troubled by the contradiction, and may go either way, but they are not not comfortable with either.
And then there's the group that conformed with the majority in 11 out of 12 instances. Some of them don't even REMEMBER afterwards that they disagreed at first.
This basic picture is supported by a bunch of new research into the difference between "conservative" and "liberal" brain function when thinking about politics, and the studies indicating that more data actually hardens people's resistance to adapting to the facts instead of supporting it. Their membership in that group is more important to them than their sense data.
No, aspies went in the right direction, but sometimes too far and sometimes off the trail completely. Sheeple are MUCH more threatening - you can't make a Nazi nation or a fundamentalist church out of aspies, it just won't work.

But when her mother, Felisha Archuleta, brought her to a local troop leader, the child's dreams were dashed. According to 9 News, the Girl Scouts worker said the child could not join, regardless of how the 7-year-old feels, because Bobby had "boy parts."
"I said, 'Well, what's the big deal?' She said 'It doesn't matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can't be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don't allow that [and] I don't want to be in trouble by parents or my supervisor,'" Archuleta told 9 News.
The Girl Scouts Of Colorado have since admitted a mistake was made. Apparently the worker who turned Montoya away was unfamiliar with the group's policies, and Bobby is now welcome to join the group. It's unclear as to whether or not she has decided to join in light of the reversal.
