Starbucks closes Newtown store before gun nuts show up for their petty rally

Friday, August 09, 2013

Posted by Chris Carr., executive vice president, U.S. Retail

Dear Customers,

At Starbucks we are proud that our stores serve as gathering places for thousands of communities across the country and we appreciate that our customers share diverse points of view on issues that matter to them. We also believe in being sensitive to each community we serve.

Today, advocacy groups from different sides of the open carry debate announced plans to visit our Newtown, Connecticut store to bring attention to their points of view. We recognize that there is significant and genuine passion surrounding this topic, however out of respect for Newtown and everything the community has been through we decided to close our store early before the event started. Starbucks did not endorse or sponsor the event. We continue to encourage customers and advocacy groups from all sides of the debate to contact their elected officials, who make the open carry laws that our company follows. Our long-standing approach to this topic has been to comply with local laws and statutes in the communities we serve.

Thank you for your understanding and respect for the Newtown community.

Sincerely,

Chris Carr

executive vice president, U.S. Retail

And people can continue to stereotype groups in any way they wish.

No biggie ridiculing the obese; they know it is all about the gun fuckers.

I can't wait to see what the next physical trait is worthy of scorn for a good cause of course.

I am not a fan of open carry and as I posted in the past, carrying a weapon should never be used to make a statement.

I also oppose stereotypes of any sort as it easily leads to bigotry. Would anyone on this board support stereotyping a group based on skin color? Sadly, too many stereotypes and bigotry are found on DU and deemed acceptable to those on one side or another of an issue.

Earlier today I posted they'd never get another dime from me and mine if they did this and I'm on the Left Coast. Sigh of relief for sanity.

I also see no reason to live in a war zone that profits no one but the NRA, GOP, gun makers and sellers and the undertaker. I am less tolerant of gun fans than in any time in my life.

This has gotten way outta hand in this nation, and does nothing but further the Koch brothers recipe for social breakdown and mayhem.

Uh, huh, no, nope.

It would probably be sufficient to ponder how gun advocates take such care of the long, gleaming barrels, oiling and polishing them to make sure that they're ready to off without a misfire when the magical moment occurs.

It's also curious that gun advocates object to such penis-related imagery, yet the ammo bag for the M240 (for instance) is famously described as its "nut sack."

But there is not one reason in the world why they think they have to have their guns with them at their little GTG. They can have their meet, but their is no reason for them to try to prove something by bringing their guns, unless it is intimidation or paranoia. There gun group meet can be just as productive without guns.

Source: CBS

OLD LYME, CT (CBS) – The brother of former Massachusetts U.S. Senator Scott Brown was arrested Thursday night in Connecticut on a number of charges, including impersonating a police officer.

Police responding to reports of a man with a gun found Bruce W. Browne, 46, of Wolcott, Connecticut driving a blue Crown Victoria with what appeared to be a disc and antennas mounted on the trunk along with “hide-away” lights.

Browne was wearing military-style pants, according to police. Inside the car in plain view, officers say they found three loaded 9 mm handguns, a black nylon duty belt with two sets of handcuffs, a police baton, 12 fully-loaded magazines with a total of 101 hollow point and 102 ball 9 mm bullets.

Browne also allegedly had a black tactical bullet proof vest with the word “POLICE” embroidered on the front and back with a silver metal TSA badge attached.
