(23,656 posts)I just don't see the fascination. Other than saving trees and having instant access to purchase books, I just don't get it. I'll take a real book over a Kindle or Nook anyday, and I'm not a Luddite. I actually enjoy gadgets.

(3,251 posts)I want not only the physical experience of having a book, but also the right to OWN it.
You don't get that with virtual "books." You are paying through the nose for a rental.

(3,251 posts)I hope more people realize they are being had with "eBooks" and are merely paying a user fee to people like Bezos who don't need the money.

(17,175 posts)And I say this as a Kindle owner, with a whole buncha books downloaded.

(38,311 posts)I also have a kobo e-book.
I've bought some e-books for it (many with no copy protection) but mostly I download treasures from www.gutenberg.org and other free public domain book sites, books that I'd likely never find as new editions or in used bookstores.
If anything, the e-book has increased my reading, all at the expense of television. I don't watch television at all any more.

(90,669 posts)Amazon has some free e-books, my public library has some, but most of my treasure trove is from the Gutenberg Project. That was my promise to myself: I won't pay for something that can disappear on someone else's whim, that I can't loan, and can't give away. If I pay for it, I should be able to do any of those things with it.
By the way, Project Gutenberg put up a notice that the Kindle Fire has been adjusted so that it is nearly impossible to download free material without an extensive work-around. The old-style Kindle does not have this feature, so it only takes a few steps to get a book onto my Mac and then to my Kindle. Good thing I was too cheap to spring for a fancy one!
My household, like yours, is overrun with real books.
So many books, so little time.

(15,696 posts)But I had to adjust the background to "book paper color," the font to "Dick and Jane-looking serif," and the print to "2 page layout" before I began to feel comfortable.
I put up with all of this because I need to be able to increase the font size. It's too hard trying to find big font titles for everything I want to read, and my book club usually showcases older, obscure science fiction titles.
I really miss the smell and feel of book paper, though.
