WE SHALL BE FREE

This ain't comin' from no prophet
Just an ordinary man
When I close my eyes I see
The way this world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread
When the last man dies for just words that he said
When there's shelter over the poorest head
We shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within
When the skies and the oceans are clean again
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud
'Cause we shall be free

When we're free to love anyone we choose
When this world's big enough for all different views
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew
Then we shall be free
We shall be free

We shall be free
Have a little faith
Hold out
'Cause we shall be free

And when money talks for the very last time
And nobody walks a step behind
When there's only one race and that's mankind
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud, have a little faith, hold out
We shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, have a little faith

We shall be free

Country music legend Willie Nelson is joining the list of entertainment celebrities to protest the war in Iraq.

According to a report in the Austin American-Statesman, Nelson woke up Christmas morning, listened to the news, and said: "There was nothing but bad news, and here it was Christmas Day. I said, 'There sure are a lot of babies dying and mothers crying,' and [his wife] Annie said, 'That sounds like a song.'" The result was an anti-war ballad titled, "What Ever Happened to Peace on Earth."

Destroying The Dixie Chicks – Ten Years After

Reflecting back on the Dixie Chicks and the public fallout, it is hard to not see that the country music community’s reaction was unmeasured, unfair, and overall, unhealthy for its future. Country music not only black balled a band that was offering sonic leadership to the genre on how to move forward while still respecting the roots of the music and remaining commercially viable, they lost one of the genre’s greatest economic engines, and may have long-term fumbled their ability to benefit from the universally-relevant appeal of acoustic roots music.

But most unfortunately, the event leaves country music with a black eye as a genre who can’t respect artists regardless of their beliefs. This typecasting of the country music fan as a closed-minded, politically-intolerant animal is a legacy it will take country music a long time to shake. Much longer than 10 years.

I recently had to review a concert from 3 hot new country acts - hadn't heard of any of em, but apparently they're all huge and the show was sold out. The only thing country in the whole show was the fiddle player the headliner had in his band. That and the suburban Republicans in their cowboy hats and minivans.

First, my naming Weird Al Yankovic was I think some kind of brain fart.

I was probably thinking of Kinky Friedman, who dabbled with the idea of running for (iirc) Governor of Texas. Willie supported him, & I rhought I recalled Kinky being a Libertarian. But now da Googul tells me I must have been wrong about Kinky being a Libertarian. I do recall having been surprised to hear that he was in the first place, since he always seemed 'way too smart & humane for that.

Thanks so much for asking; my resulting inquiry has strengthened my faith in Willie & restored it in Kinky.

Merle Haggard Sounds Off

"Why don’t we liberate these United States We’re the ones who need it the worst Let the rest of the world help us for a change And let’s rebuild America first"

These strong words come from a new songwriter wishing for peace in Iraq. Well, actually calling him new is untruthful. These words are sung by none other than Merle Haggard in his recent release debuting in 2006.

The rest of the song continues with even more inspiring resolute lines,

"Freedom is stuck in reverse Let’s get out of Iraq and get back on track And let’s rebuild America first"

For those readers who may not be country enthusiasts or who have not had the rare privilege of living in the Deep South, the significance of this song may elude you. But don’t worry; let me give you a quick flashback of Merle Haggard’s country classics composed during the late sixties. What better place to start than his hit, "Okie from Muskogee"

Molly Hatchet Fall Of The Peacemaker

A king without a sword - a land without a king -
A truth without a voice - one song left to sing...
One song to sing.
A wise man told me theres something you should know:
The way you judge a man is you look into his soul
And youll soon see everything.
A voice from the past cried, Give peace a chance!
He paid our price now hes free at last; And imagine -
We called him a dreamer.
How many times must good men die?
How many tears will the children cry...
Till we suffer no more sadness?
Stop the madness.
Oh, stop the madness.
If ashes are ashes and dust is dust,
At our journeys end, then we turn to rust -
To the sands of the shore.
White doves in flight - peace to war -
But, tell me why the peacemakers fall.
Must we bury any more?
The hush of the crowd as the horse rode by -
The black lace veil hid her tears from my eyes...
And we all wept in silence.
How many times must good men die?
How many times will the children cry...
Till they suffer no more sadness?
Oh, stop the madness.
Oh, stop all the madness.

Thu Aug 15, 2013, 11:20 PM
Aug 2013

and it was someone here who pointed it out to me, and I'm still grateful that they did.

There IS a strain of Conservatism in America that is a more Classical, less Corporatized kind, (it's about the maintenance of what has been found by hard trial and error to WORK for the American People), and it IS possible, i think, for a Liberal to go down into "The South", and really and truly kick ass down there.

But it will take the kind of balls that I also think most of our elected Democrats lack. Greyson could do it, WARREN could probably do it, Howard Dean..someone not afraid to go stand on the destroyed mountain-tops of Appalachia, and say "Yeah, This is America, and we don't have to tolerate this from the Coal Co. Owners that have been fucking you over for a hundred years."

The proof I have is that these people know full well that FDR is the reason a lot of that region has electricity, and I get a lot of people come through the hotel that I work at--even the most self-professed Conservative of the bunch swears by the Tennessee Valley Authority, knows damn well it's why power in the region is as inexpensive as it is, and doesn't want it privatized for all the oil in Texas.

Our job as Liberals isn't to sell them on the statement "Government isn't worthless." It's to PROVE that statement beyond a shadow of a doubt, in a manner that reflects real, tangible, POSITIVE change in their lives.

Like I said, I don't know if a lot of our elected Democrats have the spine to even try at this point.

DOING things like ensuring schools are funded, education is available to everyone, health care, shelter and food for those who need help, rural hospitals and good communication (internet!) would show people the good that government (all of us) can do for others.

much better than "they are going to take our guns away, stop you from praying, force you to marry a gay person" type of fear-inducing message the right presents to its base.

That I have posted may be slightly right of center. I say that some of these musicians are very smart and have managed to get there anti war views across with out getting Dixie Chik'ed, getting national airplay. They all have a common thread, they are singing about sad things.
Food for thought....

was that we needed some time to heal before people could speak words like the Dixie Chicks did, Country is at odds, and the lower end seems to be on top (which is not unique to the genre, but it's what we're talking about).

Natalie Maines was protesting about invading Iraq. Using the excuse of wait until we heal, was just. BS way to silence dissent. If people had joined her to make a fuss it might have made a difference.

Maines made no comment about 9/11. She rightly insulted W. But noooooo, too many people viewed him as heroic for using a bullhorn in NYC. His minions then lied right and left to scare the bejesus out of everyone about WMD in Iraq.

that George W. Bush went through 8 years of hell, but I don't believe it.

$400,000 a year. Your own private jet, helicopters, limosines, staff to do your cooking and cleaning and shopping and yardwork. Being famous, and powerful.

Nah, I think there are lots of tougher jobs, with far fewer rewards. I think I have one myself. I'd be happy to trade places with Obama, and I doubt if he would jump at that chance to trade places with me.

Plus, I don't think Obama is trying his heart out. Not even close. He pretty much sold out from day one when he started to pick his cabinet. I was one of the fools arguing on DU that all was not lost just because he made a bunch of bad cabinet picks. I mean, I did not like all the Clinton re-runs, but did not think it made a huge difference who was in the cabinet. But clearly I have been proven wrong.

I really do not think you have any Idea what it like to be POTUS and have a wife and two children that are forced to live in a bubble just because daddy wants to be the POTUS. I have had some serious damn rough jobs in my life, life on the line kind of jobs. I would not wish that kind of a lifestyle on anyone.

On Edit: Life style of Potus that is.

Doubtless, it has its minuses, stresses, pressures, annoyances.

But all in all, I bet it is better to have a dad who makes $400,000 a year (plus a future book deal and speaker's fees) than it is to have a dad who makes $30,000 a year (like I do) or who has lost his job.

How many countries have they visited? How many times have they been to Hawaii? I have never been to Hawaii and I doubt if I ever will. I have never even seen the Pacific Ocean, much less flown across it.

Whatever hassles they have inside their bubble, I don't think they constitute a really severe hardship or deprivation. At least there seem to be many benefits involved too.

81. I think the difference is that Obama has a conscience...
Fri Aug 16, 2013, 12:31 PM
Aug 2013

and Bush doesn't.

What's that saying? "There are two kinds of politicians: those who want to do something and those who want to be somebody."

W was definitely the latter. I think Obama is the former even though I disagree with many of his methods. I hate that he gives in to the R's so much, and I think he is thoroughly misguided about the drone program and the NSA spying program. But I do believe his heart is in the right place, and that he believes he is doing these things for the good of the people of this country.

W just wanted to be famous and powerful. Oh, and W had a Congress that would do his bidding--even the Democrats. His Congress would even do stupid shit like Medicare part D, call it a wonderful thing for the people, and then give W credit for it. Obama has a Congress (at least half of one) that hates him, and will do anything to piss him off and to thwart his efforts. That's gotta hurt when you are truly trying to help people.

Just my 2 cents.

82. that could be a difference
Fri Aug 16, 2013, 01:09 PM
Aug 2013

but I don't believe it is.

Obama has done too many bad things and been too dishonest about them for me to believe he really wants to help people.

Lots of things can be blamed on the Republicans, and SHOULD be. I fully agree with that. But Republicans cannot be blamed for Obama's simple lack of effort and then for his pretty blatant dishonesty.

He could have fought for a good thing - and lost.

I would respect that. Say he fought for the eliminating 80% of the Bush tax cuts.

Instead, he fought for bad things - and says he 'won'. Instead of fighting for the elimination of 80% of the Bush tax cuts, Obama's starting point was only - eliminating 22% of the Bush tax cuts. A very bad starting point. But suddenly that bad compromise became - the LEFT position and NOBODY was advocating that 80% of them go away - except for perhaps me and the CTJ off in the wilderness chopping down trees where nobody could hear them fall.

So now 85% of the Bush tax cuts are PERMANENT. A horrible policy which will, like the original Bush tax cuts, do tremendous damage to our country. Yet Obama hails it as a victory - a partial victory.

I spent 8 or 9 years calling Bush a lying piece of excrement for the LIES he told about the Bush tax cuts. Am I supposed to look the other way, or think it is no big deal when Obama tells the same lies about ATRA (the bill that made most of the Bush tax cuts permanent)?

To me, those lies of Obama turn him into the same lying piece of excrement that Bush looked like.

Either that, or I am supposed to be a) too stupid to see through the lies or b) say "it is okay for Democrats to lie about tax policies that benefit the rich."

I do not see how it is possible for me to a) clearly see the bad policies and b) clearly see the lies told about the bad policies and still believe that Obama is a decent guy trying to help the working class.

The frustrating part is that there seem to be so few people who can also see through the bullsh*t.

But Garth Brooks is rich and happy. I wonder how much he will get over the next decade thanks to ATRA. I bet it is more than the salary I will make for working - and that's just his tax cuts.

To the list of the decidedly progressve in country music. His Third World Warrior CD speaks volumes even after all these years. Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson once got into a rather heated political disagreement during a Highwaymen concert.

Dolly Parton also has liberal leanings and so did Johnny Cash though he was careful not to alienate his more politically conservative fans.

When I lived in Tulsa, he chose us to do his first (and so far only) website, which is now inactive while he makes plans for the future. He's very hands-on when it comes to his image and career - when we were in meetings spitballing ideas for his website he would reply back with, "Garth wouldn't do that," or, "That's something Garth would like," which could sound weird or even conceited to talk about yourself in the third person, but it was just his short version of referring to his public persona. One time he dropped by the office because he was in the neighborhood (had Trisha with him) and took us out for lunch at Hideaway Pizza just to show his appreciation for our work.

The other nice thing about working with him is that I pretty much knew nothing about his music (still don't really) so it pissed off all my Garth-loving friends and relatives that I got to hang out with him (My Christmas card one year was me standing between Garth and Trisha in front of a private jet that he had us come out to Nashville on so we could hold meetings with his merchandiser and a clearing house). I wrote something like, "Merry Xmas... I still don't know what this guy sings."

I've always kind of wondered. I like the old Tom T. Hall song 'I like beer'. I always figured if you write a song (or sing one) that a large number of people will automatically like - it'd be like finding money in the street.

Toby Keith annoys the shit out of me, but I've often wondered if he doesn't behave that way publicly because he knows that there's a demographic that will always like him.

If that's what he's doing - he's actually pretty smart.

I have always liked Garth Brooks, since I was given a CD with some of his songs - by my sister in the mid 1990s... And I guess I have a few of his records now

And he looks like he also have a heart, way more than some can claim I guess

I just hope the conservatives do not try to ouster him out from the country song tradition now then - they managed to do it with the Dixie Chicks - but then I guess they was kind of "start up" singers compared to Garth Brooks...

Indeed an balanced individual.. For some reason, from my perspective from the outside of the US, it looks like many of americans got a personal breakdown after 9/11, and have never really managed to get your feet on the ground again - and to be more balanced in your approach to things that is difficult to grasp..

Specially the conservative part if your country, looked like they got a personal, nervous breakdown - so horrible that no one can understand what happened with them.. And the election of a BLACK man to the presidency really got them out in numbers - to more and more madness and unwillingness to work with the administration to at least repair some of the horrible damage been made to the US..

From my perspective I'm little unsure where US is to go now - it can get sane again - and get their feet on the ground collective speaking - or it can just erode time and time again - to something nasty - like a civil war will start all over again... It is enough extremists in the US, to at least make it possible for something very bad to happened in the counry.....

I hope for the best for USA, but I am also afraid it will go worse, before the tide is turning - I believed it was bad when GWB was in office - (and it was) but it look like the extremist fringe really have continued to do damage to US, even after the election of President Obama (they can not stand the man) And I am afraid the fringe will continue to do damage to the US, as long as they can possible do it...

Then, it is good to have some balanced people out there, who is sane - and who is not afraid of stating his facts - and stand by it.. I guess he have earned enough money from his time in the music industry - so he can leave if he is not welcome as country artist anymore... Even if I do believe the world will loose a great artist if he does...
But then again Willie Nelson is still going strong - and have always been some of a rebel when it comes to the US foreign affairs I guess... So I guess it is place for some like Brooks in the country music industry after all..
