Turkey's Erdogan sees Israel's hand in Egyptian overthrow

urkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel on Tuesday of having a hand in the Egyptian military's overthrow of president Mohamed Mursi, making comments likely to further undermine efforts to restore Ankara's strained ties with Israel.

Erdogan, who has become one of the fiercest critics of the Islamist leader's removal last month, also said he feared "autocratic regimes" would take root if the West failed to respect election results.

"What do they say in Egypt? Democracy is not the ballot box. What is behind it? Israel. We have in our hands documentation," Erdogan told provincial leaders of his AK Party.

Erdogan did not say what documentation he had, but referred to comments he said an Israeli cabinet minister had made before Egyptian parliamentary elections held after a popular uprising pushed President Hosni Mubarak from power.

It's sick shit.

I'm completely opposed to Israel when it comes to the occupation and settlements. Just throwing that out there in advance of the coming accusations of being an apologist for Israel.

In any case, it's hard to take anything he says seriously.

Backing Egypt’s generals, Saudi Arabia promises financial support

Saudi Arabia is emerging at the forefront of a forceful effort by Persian Gulf monarchies to back Egypt’s new military leaders, exacerbating a fierce struggle for influence in the chaotic and increasingly leaderless Arab world and putting the Saudis at odds with the United States, a long-standing ally.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia promised to compensate Egypt for any aid that Western countries might withdraw in response to the harsh tactics employed by Egypt’s leaders to quell protests by supporters of the country’s deposed president, in which nearly 1,000 people and more than 100 police officers are reported to have been killed.

“Concerning those who announced stopping their assistance to Egypt or threatening to stop them, the Arab and Islamic nation is rich with its people and capabilities and will provide a helping hand to Egypt,” Faisal told the official Saudi news agency while on a visit to France.

Faisal’s pledge followed a rare foreign policy address on Friday, in which Saudi Arabia’s aging King Abdullah praised the actions of the Egyptian military and accused demonstrators of “terrorism, extremism and sedition.”

But I don't believe they hold enough sway over the Egyptian military to have orchestrated it. The military had plenty of reasons of their own to overthrow Morsi. Israel is probably supportive of the coup, but they weren't instrumental in making it happen.
