(23,664 posts)I have no objection to paying for a service. What I object to are the multiple layers of middlemen who have inserted themselves between me and my healthcare providers.
IMO we began to fuck up when the concept of health "insurance" became accepted and employers began offering it as a perk.
I'm told that no doctor was present at my birth and that the midwife who was there was rewarded by my dad giving her a calf. And I can remember going to the doctor for physicals for high school sports and paying him $5 for the exam.
My daughter was born the day before the assassination of President Kennedy and the entire bill for her including prenatal care and the actual delivery was less than $300. My son was born a little less than 3 years later at a time when I had medical insurance through my employer. He cost the insurer about $1500. Were there such advances in the field of obstetrics in 3 years to cause costs to increase by 500%? Somebody was pocketing a lot of money there.
At this point I doubt if the provision of medical care can ever be returned to a fee for service basis. The next besat thing is a single payer system. Obamacare is a step in the wrong direction because it locks in the role of the insurers.
