(18,628 posts)I think it's more a sign of how an evolving media presents the news.
Whenever someone points out violent current events as a sign of our decayng society, I remind that 100 years ago many stories slipped beneath the radar of hometown newspapers with limited column inches. Thirty years ago television news editors had to pick and choose what filled their half hour broadcasts. Today there are no limits to the amount of news from around the world a person can absorb if they have the time, and it can seem overwhelming that so much evil exists today. Statistics actually show violence in the decline.
While it seems incredible that two cops may open fire on each other in the same week, it's likely happened before. We just didn't hear about it.
Having said that, I agree that it certainly is newsworthy.

(6,670 posts)There are, in fact, more cops shot by cops, more because the level of armaments has risen so much than because police behavior has changed. Historically, when twenty or thirty cops had to raid someplace, guns blazing, the odds weren't all that good. It's really easy to shoot another cop in that situation, and it happens. But the situation as a whole rarely happened unless the cops were up against a major organized crime operation. Now it's routine for drug busts for a bunch of highly armed, extremely paranoid cops to bust in from all angles at once. I'm not at all surprised that they shoot each other. Soldiers do too under similar circumstances.

The stats aren't wrong, only how some people interpret them, and it's the same with crime statistics. While the numbers show violence is diminishing, some may say the fact there were three murders in their town last night proves otherwise.
