http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/uptown/transgender-harlem-woman-dies-days-assaulted-hate-crime-attack-article-1.1435038A bigoted thug brutally beat a transgender woman to death in Harlem just moments after realizing his friend was actually born a man, the victims family and officials said Friday.
It was the latest in a series of troubling bias attacks in the city, which is on pace to double the number of crimes against the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community in 2013 compared with last year.
In the most recent assault, Paris Wilson, 20, repeatedly punched Islan Nettles, 21, in the face after he and a group of friends spewed slurs at the victim, cops said.

Shameful that people's prejudices cause so much pain and destruction.

(4,869 posts)And using transphobic language and supporting prejudice against LGBT persons creates an environment where people think its ok to do stuff like this.
They may not do the hitting but people who support laws and discrimination create the environment for hatred like this exists.

(22,336 posts)It's like when we feminists talk about rape culture - the culture creates the environment where people think it's OK. And with hate of this sort - jokes, transphobic language, talks about Klinger, etc., create an environment where people think it's OK. We create the culture in what we do and say - we can create a more peaceful and loving culture, or otherwise.
