A friend of the Brunswick man on trial for the murder of a 13-month-old testified Monday the defendant asked her to hide his gun after the toddler was shot.

Danielle Williams said the firearm allegedly belonging to De’Marquise Elkins was picked up later that day by his mother. Karimah Elkins, on trial along with her son, is accused of lying to police and throwing the .22-caliber handgun used to shoot Antonio Santiago into a salt-water pond north of Brunswick.

Lang, 14 at the time, testified he heard Elkins count down from 5 as he pointed the gun in the direction of the baby’s stroller abnd shot him between the eyes. He was featured in a video re-enactment of the shooting prosecutors played for jurors on Friday.

Baby-killing trial update

8/26/2013

The Brunswick News

MARIETTA – Jurors got their first look this morning in at the gun prosecutors say De’Marquise Elkins used to shoot and kill 13-month-old Antonio Santiago and wound his mother, Sherry West, on a Brunswick street as the second week of testimony began in Elkins’ trial.

Glynn County Police Capt. Tommy Tindale removed from a plastic container a black revolver with a wooden handle that he said was found early the morning of March 26 in a saltwater pond behind a group of businesses in the 3500 block of U.S. 17, Brunswick.

Tindale showed the weapon to the jury just before the court broke for lunch and after Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jackie Johnson had called several witnesses who testified that Elkins had the gun the day after the murder and that his mother, Karimah Elkins, 36, and sister Sabrina Elkins,19, retrieved the gun and may have thrown it into the pond.

The evidence against De’Marquise Elkins is piling on, and yet some people are STILL blaming the parents because of a microscopic particle of gunpowder residue.
