Has anyone on the planet been able to figure out how to use the new Census maps? (Original Post) usregimechange Feb 2012 OP
What do you expect to be able to do with that page? (nt) muriel_volestrangler Feb 2012 #1
The only tab that generates data is the "business pattern" tab usregimechange Feb 2012 #2
They work for me muriel_volestrangler Feb 2012 #3
do they generate county maps with colors for you? usregimechange Feb 2012 #4
No, I think the colours are just tied to number of businesses in each county (nt) muriel_volestrangler Feb 2012 #5
Must be, used to be able to create color county maps based on a number of demographics. usregimechange Feb 2012 #6

the others, race, population, etc do nothing when you click them. Just stays on business patterns.

I get a list saying
White 997.295
African American 161,861
etc.
when I click on Race. The Population one seems useless - it just gives the total population, which is at the top of each other list for a county anyway. All the others give information, though.

they tend to be very helpful.

I used to do a lot of work with census data. Things may have changed in the last six, seven years, but they used to be delighted when someone was as interested in the stuff they work on as they are.

I was also one of few people, in the aftermath of the 2004 election, who was able to explain why Alaska reported as flat gray, rather than the blue/red/purple mix applied to counties in all the other states. The reason was an electronic reporting error that had no bearing on the statewide result (truly, there's no conspiracy here - it made sense down to a technical reason I can explain and fully believe) but led to county results being mixed together in a way that it was impossible to pull them apart.

I learned this by directly calling the Alaska Board of Elections. They actually got a pretty big kick out of my call - and told me that I was the first person to call them for an explanation of what the hell happened!

Figuring out how to do something useful with it? Different question.

In my county there are 72,797 people, 37,357 of whom are men. Also there are 1774 businesses, 13% of which are food service or accommodation, only one is a mining company.

Select the tab you're interested in and then click on the county you want to know about.
