Walker To Not File Challenges Against Recall Signatures

Gov. Scott Walker's (R-WI) campaign will decline to file challenges today against the petition signatures to recall him, saying that they were unable to review the 150,000 pages within the allotted time:

WisPolitics reports:

Walker faced a deadline today to file challenges after a Dane County judge granted him a 20-day extension beyond the 10 days allotted under state law. Walker also sought an additional two weeks but was turned down.

"We faced an impossible timeline," said Walker spokeswoman Ciara Matthews.

Matthews declined comment when asked if the campaign would appeal the ruling denying additional time beyond the original extension.

2. Can the Democrats push the recall election to November?

Or is there a time limit?

With Obama on the ticket, Walker would be toast.

6. The law states that the election must held within 6 weeks of the certification of the signatures.

"If the official finds that the amended petition is sufficient, the official shall file the petition and call a recall election to be held on the Tuesday of the 6th week commencing after the date of filing of the petition."

7. No. And it's not up to Democrats, it's up to the GAB and the law.

GAB has til 3/19 to determine whether a recall will happen and then a specific time in which to schedule primary(s) and election (don't know off top pf my head).

3. Why spend the money?

I am unsure who pays for the challenges but it would seem to me there is a cost involved in the "leg work."

Save the funds if you don't feel it is a good way to spend campaign cash.

8. They've spent night and day for the past 4 weeks doing the 'leg-work' already.

They aren't challenging signatures because the amount of invalid signatures is obviously insignificant and won't make a difference.

11. A serious question.....Can Walker run in the Democratic recall primary for Governor?

I heard this proposed a month or so ago. In Wisconsin, can a candidate run in more than one primary for the same job?

13. No. And if they write him in, it's dumb and futile.

He can only be on ballot as one party and he's already on as Repub unless he resigns.

There's talk of a write-in campaign, but:

Can Republicans thwart the recalls by running a write-in campaign for Walker during the Democratic Primary?

Any attempts to do this would be unsuccessful under Wisconsin's election laws, because a candidate may not appear on the ballot for as a candidate for both parties for the same office. The recall statute provides that an officeholder is automatically a candidate in the recall election unless the official resigns within 10 days after the original filing of the petition. Therefore, Walker is automatically the Republican candidate for Governor in the recall election because he did not resign within 10 days after the original filing of the petition. Even if a campaign to write-in Walker as the Democratic nominee was successful, the law says that if a candidate is already the nominee of one party for an office, and is also nominated by write-in votes at the primary election to the same office as the candidate of a different party, the candidate does not have a choice, but shall be placed on the ballot for the election under the office and party for which the individual was already a candidate.

....if there were a significant number (percentage) of fraudulent signatures, he would have hired additional people to review the list, he would have taken his petition for an extension to the next appeal level....but it was obvious, he had nothing!

17. They have had MILLIONS of dollars and THOUSANDS of people reviewing.

“I think it’s bordering on the absurd,” said Tate. “You know, he has raised what, 9 or 10 million to fund this recall effort; he has gotten three times as much time as is allowed under state law to review these petitions; there were reports of 13,000 people who volunteered to review these petitions. But now he is not only not getting it done, but saying we had a harder time standing in snow getting these petitions, then people sitting in warm desks and looking at paper.”

The Walker campaign also issued a press release. Key quote:

“We expect that because we have not been given sufficient time to verify the signatures, the Government Accountability Board will adhere to Judge Mac Davis’ ruling, as they have publicly committed, and will continue to take affirmative steps to remove duplicate, invalid or fraudulent signatures in order to maintain integrity and fairness in the process,” explained Walker campaign communications director Ciara Matthews.

In addition to the official effort by the Friends of Scott Walker campaign, in conjunction with the Republican Party of Wisconsin, a third party effort - Verify the Recall - has also been attempting to validate signatures via both visual and electronic inspections.

Matthews noted that between both efforts, more than 20,000 people have worked on inspections. “Despite these massive efforts, the time to challenge hundreds of thousands of signatures was simply unavailable.”

Dog whistle to "The Base": "If we'd only had more time, we would have been able to prove that ACORN and George Soros forged more than 75 percent of the signatures. The recall election will never be legitimate, because it is based on fraudulent signatures."
