Labor Day not a happy holiday for working people (NY Daily News)

http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/labor-day-blues-article-1.1442163

Union leaders cancelled this year’s Labor Day Parade on Fifth Ave. in favor of a get-out-the-vote campaign for impending city elections. There was precious little to celebrate anyhow.

Across America the ranks of unionized workers continue to fall. The struggling — and very worthy — effort to organize fast-food workers stands as the only broad-scale push to halt the long slide. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy has been brutal on the working- and middle-classes.

In the four years since the end of the Great Recession in 2009, America has created jobs so glacially that unemployment still stands at 7.4% nationally, and is has persisted above 8% in New York for a record-breaking 48 months, according to a new study by the Fiscal Policy Institute.
