This is Don's daughter and my dad requested that I post a message on his behalf if anything ever happened to him. I'm not sure if you were all aware of my dad's health issues but my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer last Fall. He fought a long, hard battle but succumbed to his illness yesterday, Sun. 9/1.
He always spoke very highly of his friends on this forum and my family would like to thank you all for making him feel welcome here (even if you didn't always agree with what he had to say). This forum was truly his second home!

I am deeply saddened by his passing. I will miss his postings, greatly.
But at the same time - I would like to pass on to you that I am very deeply appreciative of your father, and his contributions here at DU. When we were a small and fledgling community, he played a great role in bringing news to our LBN - making it a great place to find legitimate news from across the country (and world); when we were a more solid community, he got conversations going that led to reflection and deeper conversations. This is a member driven community, and your father helped build it and has been an essential part of this on-line community.
In this deeply difficult personal time, I thank you for taking the time to let us know of your father's passing.
Deepest sympathy,

(27,820 posts)I posted here regularly for many years, and your dad was a great favourite of mine.
No matter the topic being discussed, and whether he and I agreed on said topic, his eloquence in expressing his views was always admirable, and his keen sense of humour made DU a 'second home' for many of us.
My thoughts are with you and your family tonight; may your memories sustain you in your time of loss, and comfort you in the days to come.

(27,820 posts)and it is indeed a sad situation.
There are too many posters, from back when I was a regular here, who have since passed. They contributed so much to a community that once thrived here, and their loss is always mourned by those of us who appreciated that contribution.
Alas, as things go, we often don't realize how much a part of our lives some people are until they are gone, and their absence resounds in our hearts and minds.
I wish you all the best, too. Sincerely.

My memory is not great for what he told me many years ago - but did he do some diving for the Navy? It would be much appreciated if you could post his obituary here - leave out the family name for privacy reasons. It is a special blessing to have a good man for a father. And it makes the loss harder to handle.

(25,405 posts)NNN0LHI was Don's M.A.R.S. (Military Amateur Radio Service) call-sign. He was a gentleman and a prince of a man. We talked by phone back in the early days of DU and we even tried a cross-band HF link up a time or two. Don will be missed, indeed, but his service to his fellow military service members and to DU will last in our memory.
Thanks, Don. RIP brother.

hfojvt - My dad was only 58.
DemoTex and Divernan- He was a licensed amateur radio operator and a MARS member but he did not serve in the military. My mom has chosen not to have a public service for my dad because that was my dad's wishes and he is being cremated. We will probably have a small, private family service for him in a few weeks.
alsame and mahatmakanejeeves - My dad did enjoy fishing with his grandson (my son) and my son enjoyed fishing with his papaw as well. My son loved trains when he was younger so he and my dad bonded over trains and fishing.
SoCalDem - Thank you for sharing the article.
ProfessorGAC - I do remember you and I'm glad you and my dad were able to meet in person.

(20,878 posts)Your father was a kind and caring man and I was always glad to see him around and always read his posts.
I'm so very sad to read that he has passed away.
May your grief be short and your memories of your late father be long and sweet.
Take care of yourself and again, I am really sorry to read about my friend Don, one of DU's first and best without a doubt.
for you Catherine.
