Play *Tin-Foil or Official Story*

Last edited Wed Sep 4, 2013, 10:12 AM - Edit history (2)

Which of these items from the news the last day or three is tin-foil fantasy and which are the uncontroversial "official story" (the government version of events)?

1) US shipments of weapons to opposition forces in Syria have been being arranged/sent the last 4-6 weeks and will soon be changing the tactical picture.

2) The CIA has been training and equipping elite Syrian opposition forces and the first cell of 50 of these fighters/agents is currently sneaking into Syria (as of 48 hours ago)

3) Our chief objective in proposed military action against Syria is the destruction of the Syrian air-force. (An aside: The air-force is said to be the target because it is "the means of delivery" for nerve gas attacks on the people, though the gas attacks in question were largely, if not entirely, carried out by truck-mounted artillery rockets.)

1. Official Story. (source -Secretary of State. Not breaking news, but discussed Tuesday with new emphasis.)
2. Official Story. (source -White House, told to NYT the day of Obama, McCain meeting)
3. Official Story. (source -Secretary of State and/or SecDef, Tuesday)

What I'm feeling today... if this is all about manuevering a secular and civilized opposition faction into being able to take power when Assad implodes I am not categorically opposed to that, but do us the courtesy of making the case, wouldya'? An activist policy would at least have merits to argue, unlike the unconvincing 'strikes in search of an objective' story which was too strange to take seriously.

Where the mainstream news sounds like tin-foil helmet stuff.

... but the sarin-type gas was from a ground missile.

Thought they mentioned on the news tonight that the none of shipments of weapons to the opposition have not been sent yet?

Kerry and/or Hagel were saying today (to McCain, I think) that they started two months ago and were now really flowing in. Being trying to reassure McCain of our activity on the front, he may have been tonally exaggerating how far along we are during the hearing.

I edited to make the OP more conservative on that point.

I don't know if he words were from an old clip or a new one.

So, it is possible that 'he' is the one that was wrong on the issue.
