The myriad of rebel groups in Syria has members of Congress -- along with the American public -- questioning the value of a military intervention there. To help out, here’s a guidebook to help navigate the opposition groups working with the international community.


First political groups are explained: the Syrian Opposition Council and the Syrian National Council. Then the article covers military groups. First the Supreme Joint Military Command (working with the Syrian Opposition Council) and then two extremist groups: the Al-Nusra Front (associated with Al-Qaeda in Iraq) and the Syrian Islamist Front (also a Salafist group, but organized from other Persian Gulf states and wanting to create an Islamist state in Syria).
