In the closing days of the NYC mayoral campaign it appears Mr.Bloomberg is becoming a little bit unhinged now that his annointed one Quinn is tanking . De Blasio's campaign of describing New York as a Tale of Two Cities is resonating with the people but striking a nerve with Mr.Bloomberg.
Q: Then theres Bill de Blasio, whos become the Democratic front-runner. He has in some ways been running a class-warfare campaign
A: Class-warfare and racist.
Q: Racist?
I mean hes making an appeal using his family to gain support. I think its pretty obvious to anyone watching what hes been doing. I do not think he himself is racist. Its comparable to me pointing out Im Jewish in attracting the Jewish vote. You tailor messages to your audiences and address issues you think your audience cares about.
But his whole campaign is that there are two different cities here. And Ive never liked that kind of division. The way to help those who are less fortunate is, number one, to attract more very fortunate people. They are the ones that pay the bills. The people that would get very badly hurt here if you drive out the very wealthy are the people he professes to try to help. Tearing people apart with this two cities thing doesnt make any sense to me. Its a destructive strategy for those you want to help the most. Hes a very populist, very left-wing guy, but this city is not two groups, and if to some extent it is, its one group paying for services for the other.

So let me get this straight: showing your interracial family to the city is racist, but stopping people on the basis of the color of their skin and violating their rights is not? Take a hike Bloomberg, NYC will have a new progressive mayor.

(23,549 posts)This guy is a real asshole and exactly what's wrong with the putrid elites in business and politics. They need to be swept away. This is the kind of guy that FDR railed against. What's dangerous is that someone like him would even feel comfortable around the Democratic Party.

Work your ass off to the grave and while doing so pay homage to your benevolent benefactor Mr. Bloomberg.

I have never been a huge fan of Mayor Bloomberg. But until reading this interview, I had given him credit for having a bit more class than he obviously has. Accusing De Blasio of running a 'racist' campaign merely for running ads that show his mixed-race family is just utterly beneath contempt. And it is particularly rich coming from a man who thinks it is perfectly okay to infringe on the Constitutional rights of certain of the city's residents based on the color of their skin (and one or two other demographic criteria). And the mayor's attempt to suggest it is comparable to him (Bloomberg) playing to the fact that he is Jewish fails entirely. First, I believe it was widely known that Bloomberg was Jewish when he ran for office, and second, he certainly was never expected to conceal that fact.
Frankly, I think the entire interview is in very bad form. An outgoing office-holder publicly commenting on the field of candidates for his replacement is just . . . unseemly. Even George W. Bush -- a man not widely known for his particularly classy way of dealing with people -- had the decency and good sense to refrain from commenting on the 2008 election and the candidates of that election. My estimation of the Mayor as a human being has dropped considerably as a result of reading this article.
