CLEVELAND, Ohio -- City officials today reprimanded the dispatcher who took Amanda Berry's 9-1-1 call in May when she escaped from Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue home.
Dispatcher Jack Purdy was scolded for failing to stay on the line with Berry until officers arrived on the scene, which violated city policy.
Communications Commander Thomas Stacho said in a letter (see letter in document viewer below) that Purdy could have been more compassionate and demonstrated more empathy in his dealings with Berry.
He also said he recognized that Purdy, who has been with the city for four years, efficiently got the police to respond to Berry's call that she was a kidnap victim who had escaped her captor.
