I was thinking of countries of the world that have a densely layered and sophisticated air defense system. If I had to take a guess I would say they are as follows: Israel, Greece, and then Syria. North Korea and Iran have vastly more AA in terms of sheer quantity however they lack the quality that Israel and Greece have in comparison (literally jet age Soviet era technology). Syria is kind of between relying on older Soviet technology but also having some of the newer generation of anti air defensive systems. If it is true they have received the S300 I fear that coupled with their current air defense layers makes it really risky for the U.S. to wage a war of aggression even from the air.
What really scares me is the anti ship missiles hitting one of the U.S military ships in the region. It only takes one for U.S. lives to be in danger frankly. If that happens, that could escalate the situation very rapidly.
I just don't see how war is the solution in this situation as it seems utterly pointless. The more you think about it the more you realize you have more question than answers. Based on that alone, you should be alarmed and deeply concerned IMVHO.

(3,978 posts)it is about many unknowns. It just seems iffy at best to be so optimistic about war.

We are out of Iraq now...since Obama...no mission creep there either...
We are leaving Afghanistan...no mission creep there now either.
What were you saying about Mission Creep?

(3,978 posts)U.S. is still firmly in Iraq and assisting the Iraqi government and Kurds in Northern Iraq against the resurgent AQ.
Afghanistan is looking like a great deal for the Chinese to swoop in for the resources while American blood is spilled.
I think I can go on and on..
As for mission creep watch Vietnam: A television history and see what mission creep truly means.
The U.S. has trained, armed the Syrian factions and is now about to launch air strikes, which is an escalation of involvement.

(15,189 posts)Both are big countries as we learned from Bush, but both have told us not to do anything in Syria. We are walking on thin ice here. And never in our history have we had a congress and senate that doesn't like the President like this one. These assholes would vote for action, and be right there to impeach if it's very unpopular. I hope Obama comes up with other ways rather than bombs to make this situation better.
