Was in Westminster, Colorado today helping with political canvass and a young man in his early 20's. drove by on a main drag driving a Jeep style clunker with a 3x5 foot Confederate flag mounted to it. I would imagine that he believes minorities and unions are the reason he has little money. Too bad he does not understand that the GOP is not on his side. The Confederacy had nothing to offer the country.

(45,806 posts)The darn flags were almost bigger than their car! I moved from there in 1992, but it wouldn't surprise me if they still do that, and very proudly!

(32,099 posts)There's some clown that regularly drives around my town with an old clunker pick-up truck that has three flag poles mounted in the bed. On them are the Confederate flag, another flag of the Confederacy, and the American flag (talk about not quite getting it.) Most people, however, just have bumper stickers or a front license plate with the Loser flag on it. (We only have a rear license tag here.)

My uncle was an asshole. A big time, racist asshole. My father got mad at me when I refused to go to the asshole's funeral.
And yes, the uncle was once a Klansman. Fuck him. I wish there was a hell for assholes like him to burn in.

(56,912 posts)SO SICK OF THE SOUTH BASHING. REDNECKS AND DUMBASSES ARE AN INTERNATIONAL ISSUE. NO ONE ESCAPES THIS CRAP.
Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)It's not unique to the south, but it is perfectly clear in which states the rednecks and dumbasses are in power and in which they are simply embarrassing.

(12,448 posts)are fools. I don't blame the ambitious for using that foolishness, they are ambitious, after all.
Look at it this way, where could an ignorant, illiterate, asshole like Perry (pick whichever IIA office older you like) be elected governor? Which states did you come up with? Solid red and/or solidly stupid, but not all southern.
What's the difference? How many plains states are lining up behind Kansas? Do you see Iowa or Illinois trying to emulate Wisconsin? Are the people of Washington or Oregon praising the Godliness of Idaho?
This is what is unique about the American South. They keep clinging to a false notion of a nation within the nation that is fostered and fed by the ambitious parasites shouting about "The War of Northern Aggression" they started and lost a century and a half ago. And the foolish Americans of the former confederate states buy it and love it over and over and over.

(56,912 posts)in the past two elections. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE DIVIDE or not? IT WAS VERY CLOSE. as it was in a lot of STATES through out the country
we are on DU to support Democrats and that means ALL OVER THE NATION.
Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)DU is a place where Democratic political junkies and policy wonks come to talk about things, to share and argue various positions, ideas, and strategies, and to learn about the things we never hear or see from the TV/Soma machine.
I understand the divide, apparently better than you do. Of course I've had the advantage of living all over the country and finding commonality everywhere I've gone. You seem to be blind to the fact that the divide is created and sustained by people that are typically born and raised in the south and lack the will to learn about people in other places and from other cultures.
It doesn't matter what color jersey you wear, if you're a backward, fantasy based, fool, you shouldn't be allowed any power over others, period. If you really need to have the reasons why science and religion are not comparable or compatible explained to you, you have no business deciding anything for anyone else and your opinions are not equal to those formed through fact and understanding.

(12,448 posts)Care to explain why the former confederate states became a solid block for the Democratic Party after the American Civil War, a solid block for a century until Democrats forced a measure of equality and justice on them? Perhaps you can further explain why they are now a solid block for the republican party and have been such since that time?

(5,815 posts)Now, I'm not one to argue Chicago doesn't have its massive issues due to the self-segregation of White Flight. But, I flew back in July to visit family in a southwest suburb where I grew up, and as I turned onto the street I grew up on, there was a pick-up with a giant Confederate Flag flying in the wind.
I won't say there isn't racism in Chicago's drawn and sorted suburbs of infinite whiteness, but that one took me aback. I'd never seen anything so overt there in my entire 30+ year life. Usually racism in Chicago's suburbs involves muttered slurs, social isolation, and light police harassment. But many working class and union people will at least declare social liberalism, Democratism, and tolerance. But the Confederate Flag?!
To pile injury on insult, I saw it as I was driving my boyfriend to my parents' home for the first time. Being a born and raised Berkeleyite, he's heard plenty about Middle America. And while I warned him against the general racism he might encounter, I was at a total loss to explain the Dukes of Hazard.
It was a very WTF moment. I still think about it and wonder. Was it a lone bigot, or had something shifted in the low-ordered racism duringg five years I've gone?

(36,281 posts)The GOP was the anti-slavery party that kept the union together during the war of secession. Lincoln was the first republican president. It wasn't the same party then, but still. The Republican party had nothing to do with the confederacy. That would be the pro-slavery Democratic Party.
Do you want the red pill or the blue pill?
