Cleveland police investigate hate crime after rocks thrown onto patio of Detroit Avenue gay bar

Posted: 09/09/2013

CLEVELAND - For the second time in less than a week, Cleveland police are investigating what they call a hate crime.

It happened outside of a gay bar called Cocktails on West 93rd Street and Detroit Avenue Friday night.

Surveillance cameras captured images of a small group of kids throwing rocks over the wall of an enclosed patio at the bar. Ric Scardino said he was cooking food on the patio when the rocks started flying.

"All of a sudden a rock came in and it angered me so much, I didn't want another Jared Fox," Scardino said.

Jared Fox was the man punched, kicked and beaten while walking to the bar on West 93rd Street around midnight on Aug. 31.

After two Cleveland hate crimes, West Side club fighting back

September 09, 2013 at 5:25 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After facing two designated hate crimes in less than a week, a West Side LGBT-friendly bar on Cleveland’s West Side is fighting back.

Cocktails occupies the corner of W. 93rd Street and Detroit Avenue, and has for more than a decade. The space itself has been a gay-friendly bar for at least 28 years, since activist Patrick "Ric" Scardino moved to town.

“I’ll protect every last person in this neighborhood,” Scardino said.

Scardino said the neighborhood the club sits in - at the cusp of Cleveland's Edgewater, Cudell and Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods - has seen rough patches over the years, but the frequency of attacks has increased noticeably since this spring, with at least six attacks on patrons heading to and from the bar.

Maybe he'll rat out his accomplices, but charging as a hate crime may be overkill, due to the young age.
