In light of George Zimmerman and his recent actions I began to wonder the following. If property owner is personally anti-guns, could he/she refuse to rent a property to a gun owner?
While it is possible that, at some point (if he doesn't commit an act that even he can walk away from legally) he might make money off of his NRA fame/notoriety I imagine that he is having to rent a home/apartment at this stage of the game. I will be the first to admit that I would never want Zimmerman as a tenant because he is a perpetual accident waiting to happen and I would be concerned about the state of my property.
I would not be crazy about renting to a responsible gun owner either to tell the truth. He/She would have to provide some pretty good references. My thoughts are influenced by having a former roommate who moved his extremely troubled son into the house we shared. I moved out because it was not a good situation (extremely long story). Within a couple of weeks after I moved out, the son's girlfriend broke up with him, he invited her over, apparently had bought some shells for his Dad's shotgun (I had tricked his Dad into getting rid of the ones he had a few years earlier), and committed suicide in front of the girl. This was one really messed up kid and the girl is lucky he didn't kill her first. This girl was a disaster and a recipe for a bad ending. I was not in the least bit surprised by what happened. It was never a matter of if he would or wouldn't kill himself but when he would succeed. Dad had blinders on and refused to see how serious the situation. There was no getting through to him. I was so glad to get out of there.

(28,762 posts)1. I would think the property owner would have to make
that clear before renting the property. A business owner still has the right to refuse service to anyone and I don't think it's any different for property owners renting property.

There are still protected classes. But, I do not think that "gun-owner" is a protected class.

(21,363 posts)3. I have been selling my house to a young couple on contract the last two years. They split up a
couple of months ago due to him being bi-polar and stopping his meds. I had gotten close to them and their seven year old son during this time.
They met to try to work something out on the 21rst of August. He killed himself in front of her in the house with a rifle that night.
I had never even thought of asking if he was a gun owner.
I think your question is very relevant to consider.
