CONCORD, N.H. (AP) The other jury is in: A second periodical used for everything from predicting the weather to helping people lose weight agrees that this winter's shaping up to be cold and snowy.
The Dublin, N.H.-based Old Farmer's Almanac which, at 222, is believed to be the oldest continuously published periodical in North America, is predicting that a drop in solar activity and a change in ocean patterns point to colder-than-average temperatures and higher-than-average snowfall totals.
The 2014 edition officially comes out Tuesday.
Last month, the Maine-based Farmer's Almanac, said much the same. The younger cousin has been published for a mere 197 years.
The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a cold winter for every region but the lower Great Lakes, upper Midwest and the northern states of the Northeast.

(86,579 posts)It was evident that we were going to have a "flash-in-the-pan" summer and an early and cold winter to follow since back in April.
The OFA is usually correct, still but a copy when I can find it out here.
It will be good for skiing out here with a better snow year, compared to last year which was on the skimpy side of moderate snow pack. We had an early snow-melt run-off this spring but more rain into mid-summer and now having monsoons after massive fires, that means the rivers and streams are still at high levels late in the summer, unusual compared to recent couple decades... and migratory birds that weren't coming here before 2010.
Should be interesting to see how this all turns out.

(60,010 posts)that east of Rockies, a cooler and wetter fall and winter.
We finally have had a week without rain, here in SW Ala.
All thru winter, spring and summer, it rained, sprinkled, showered almost every day,no more than two days in a row without rain.
Actually, was nice, keeping the temps down to below 90 for the most part this summer.
But the weeks took off like crazy.
