"A Catholic priest has refused communion to a lesbian, solely because she is a lesbian at her mothers funeral. He said to her directly that he did so because she is living with a woman, and that is a sin, according to the church.
In claiming to be upholding the Catechism, Fr Guarnizo is displaying woeful ignorance ot it, on at least three counts. "

The biggest change that came out of Vatican II was the realization that the Church is all of us, not just the Pope, the Vatican and the Bishops. Some have given all they had to give to the fight, and have joined other communions or just walked away. I can understand and sympathize with that. However, those outside the Church should realize that there are many of us inside the Church unwilling to let the tyrants take over. Sooner or later, someone on the right is going to light a fuse that will go down in history alongside Luther's 95 Theses. It would be ironic indeed if it turns out that Father Guarnizo lit that fuse!

(16,079 posts)The tyrants are in charge...kudos for fighting against the powers of darkness from within, but I think you're fighting a losing battle!
It's your Bishops that have jumped on the anti-woman band wagon...and allied themselves with the Christian Taliban, groups of nut jobs who not that long ago considered your church to be a cult!
And I'm not even going to get started on the Catholic League and their Archie Bunker leader, Bill Donahue...suffice it to say, the tyrants have taken over!!!

(36,286 posts)Catholics are going to find the means to be Church without the bishops. They can have all the fancy building and pretty clothes, we'll have the rest.

(108,977 posts)The thing is, not all parishes are so extreme in their views.
I have been a member of 2 parishes that were pretty liberal in their views and how the congregation and priests interact.
People don't mindlessly follow everything the church says. It hasn't been like that for a long time.

(1,058 posts)You must have more faith in the Catholic church than I do, and I'm Catholic.
There are assholes in ANY group of people, whether they are priests, politicians, posters at DU, or workers at Starbucks. I'm quite sure that the priest involved has had a very unpleasant call from his bishop.

(81,257 posts)I didn't give the proper formulaic response when presented with the Eucharist. I think I said "thank you." He stopped immediately and withheld it and said "are you a Catholic?" Right there in the Communion line! I called the rectory after Mass and complained.
I don't march to your judgmentalism sir. And btw, have you cleaned up that pedophilia thing yet?
Interesting side-note - we recently got a letter from the parish administrator, who was trying to reassure everyone that any donations to whatever-the-hell-it-is-this-time fundraising campaign were going TO THAT CAMPAIGN, and not - um - er - uh - "elsewhere." The letter cited a complaint from "one" parishioner who didn't "trust" (and that was the word he used) how the funding was going to be allocated. HAH! We ALL knew what THAT meant! Can't tell you how many complaints I've heard mumbled by other mothers at our parish school through the years. Quite a few of us didn't want to put anything in the collection basket anymore because we all suspected it was going to some settlement somewhere else on behalf of yet another molester priest that Roger Mahony had just reassigned and thus moved safely out of range.

(36,286 posts)about people desecrating the Host. According to them , people wander into Catholic Masses all the time to grab Hosts and take them home or tuck them into the hymnals or whatever. I've read posts from priests proudly describing how they followed someone and made them swallow the Host then and there, etc. The other complaint is of people gulping the Communion Wine!
It's sad to see people so caught up in the defense of the Eucharist who have so little understanding of what it is!
