N Korea to suspend uranium enrichment

updated at 17:18 UTC, Feb. 29

North Korea has announced that it has agreed to take steps toward denuclearization. The US State Department has confirmed the agreement.

The State Department and the North's foreign ministry made the announcement almost simultaneously on Wednesday, following bilateral talks on the North's nuclear issues in Beijing last week.

The breakthrough means that North Korea will suspend nuclear testing, firing long range ballistic missiles, and enriching uranium at its nuclear complex in Nyongbyon.

It is to also allow inspections of its nuclear facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
