Romney and Santorum try to prove they're not anti-women's rights (Oops, updated)

Mitt Romney comes out against Blunt Amendment to repeal President Obama's birth control mandate

by Jed Lewison

<...>

Mitt Romney is nothing if not predictable. One day after narrowly winning Michigan's primary by veering severely to the right, he's apparently decided it's time to flip-flop his way back to the middle, because he's now decided to come out against the Blunt Amendment which would repeal President Obama's birth control coverage mandate:

ALERT: Mitt Romney tells ONN he would not vote for senate bill which would allow employers to deny coverage for birth control.
— @JimHeathONN via Twitter for BlackBerry® (ONN is the Ohio News Network.)

Earlier this month, Romney described the birth control coverage mandate as an affront to religious liberty.

On January 20, 2012, the Obama administration affirmed a rule that would force Roman Catholic hospitals, charities, and universities to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization, in violation of their religious principles. This is wrong.

In last week's debate, he said:

I don't think we've seen in the history of this country the kind of attack on religious conscience, religious freedom, religious tolerance that we've seen under Barack Obama. Most recently, of course, most recently requiring the Catholic Church to provide for its employees and its various enterprises health care insurance that would include birth control, sterilization and the morning-after pill. Unbelievable.

That was batshit crazy nonsense, particularly given the fact that religious groups and organizations are exempt from the rule. But given his position then, it's remarkable that he's now flip-flopped so dramatically. And not only did he flip-flop, he's now saying presidential candidates shouldn't even talk about birth control at all!

Updated to add, never mind:

Romney Camp Denies Candidate Opposed to Blunt Amendment

After conflicting reports over whether Mitt Romney told an Ohio TV reporter he opposed the Blunt amendment, which allows employers to deny health care coverage that conflicts with their conscience, the campaign clarified that Romney supports Sen. Roy Blunt's (R-MO) legislation.

“Regarding the Blunt bill, the way the question was asked was confusing," a spokesman told TPM. "Governor Romney supports the Blunt Bill because he believes in a conscience exemption in health care for religious institutions and people of faith.”

Fastest flip flop ever!

Santorum's Desperate Attempt at Connecting with Women

by SuzieQ4624

Apparently Santorum just got the memo that women make up 51% of the population and (gasp!) they have the right to vote and (double gasp!) they don't like being talked down to by some slimeball Puritan in a sweater vest. Who would have thought women like to have their rights and life choices respected?

Last night, during his concession speech, he shared with the audience that his mother worked all through his childhood as a nurse, and made more money than his father! The nerve of some women.

Santorum's wife also worked as a nurse when they met, "but after we got married, she decided to walk away, yet didn't quit working. She was a mother..."

That was his completely lame attempt at showing women that he's not a misogynist, who hates women and has major mommy issues (if you would please just ignore every statement he's made about women and revoking women's rights based on religious principles and that he basically married his mother).

<...>

In the lamest attempt to include women and give them credit (but not where credit is due, because this is a wildly inaccurate statement) he said the follow sentence...

"The men and women who signed the Declaration (of Independence) wrote the final phrase, 'We pledge to each other our lives, our fortune, and our sacred honor".

Since when did women sign the Declaration of Independence? Of all the things women have actually accomplished in the past 100 years, he's giving us credit for one of the few things we had no part in?

as a child because she was not always at home tending to his every whim. And being a nurse, she probably worked weekends and holidays too.
