Ari Melber is much better to listen to than O'Donnell.
Man oh man.
I never heard Ari Melber but you are on the money w O'Donnell. And I like him, I know he's right, he's just fing condescending and it bugs me so much I can't watch him. He has a lot to feel good about in his career; I'd be full of myself too I guess. But it's hard to watch, so

What Lawrence O'Donnell did to Weiner was uncalled for and I don't harbor any sympathy for Weiner. The fact is that he wasn't going to win to begin with, so why bother?

I'd like to see CH's ratings over a 6 month period, then compare that same period to the person who occupied the same slot prior. That would be more revealing.
That being said, I think that Hayes is super sharp, but looks and sounds very young - like some strange offspring of Rachel Maddow and Doogie Howser.

(12,151 posts)I'll take that over the ubiquitous alternative. The choice of guests, the discussion format, and Chris' own insight and wonky knowledge base mean it's possible to actually learn something watching the show.
It might be an uphill climb in the sense that people have become used to just having their own opinions screamed back at them, but I think he's raised the collective IQ of both MSNBC and cable news / commentary shows several points.
We're back to watching the whole 8-10pm slots most nights since Chris has moved in.

I'm not one who is glued to the breaking news disaster coverage. I'll listen to it initially, but so much misinformation is thrown out to the public that I wait 2-3 days after the disaster has passed before tuning the story back on to get what really happened.
I usually like Chris Hayes for giving context to the breaking news disaster story and how some political issues affect it.

monotonous vocal patterns...
When I watch Rachel, I can't wait to hear where she's going to take us. It's entertaining, yes, but intellectually engaging.
With Chris Hayes, bless him, I feel a little bit lectured to, a little bit whined at, kind of like he's my annoying buddy who is right but irritating.
Be creative! Explore the material! Break out of the rote patterns! Can, do, buddy, we need good young emerging journalists. Maybe he just needs to go do some more building work. He'll be good, one day, just needs to be way, way more interesting.

(8,409 posts)I am a classically-trained singer (was an opera major in college). Although I don't do much singing anymore, I'm am always VERY aware of people's voices. Chris Hayes' speaking voice is, unfortunately, pitched rather high (which is not ideal for being a talking head on TV), and with a slightly nasal quality on top of that. And to the extent that his pitch changes at all, it is within a very limited range. I like the guy, too, and I think he's very smart. But sometimes, I just find it hard to listen to his voice.
Rachel, of course, has a really rich, mellifluous quality to her voice. Her voice is very smooth-sounding, with a nice, open, resonant quality about it, and she has a much widr range of speaking pitch, which she uses to terrific effect.

(11,785 posts)It was pretty off-putting in the beginning but he's so good, I stuck with it and am now able to focus on what he's saying rather than how he sounds. And, unlike too many tenors I've known, he doesn't have resonance where his brains ought to be. He's got what is probably the smartest news show on TV, and it's nice to not be moving s-l-o-w-l-y through the news using cue cards for 5-year-olds.

(37,364 posts)When he was on weekend mornings with the longer format, his show was more like a seminar. Now it is just like he's trying to foist some point out there that he wants to make rather than letting the conversations evolve. This format is not the best for what his talents are.

(2,424 posts)The network is a mouthpiece for third way politics.
In other words:
It does very well on social issues such as racial, gender, or sexual orientation equality.
It fails miserably on the topic of income inequality.
Income inequality affects everyone and should be of the highest priority. The network would appeal to a much greater range of people.

(7,309 posts)Sadly, it's true. I like Rachel and Chris, but even they, on issues of economics, fall a little short.
Over the past few years, i feel MSNBC has moved from appealing to a wide audience of working class folk and Progressives, to now basically appealing to elitist policy wonks. I find almost every show now unwatchable. There's a reason the networks overall ratings are in the gutter.

(11,785 posts)a week, they'd have a show in the "Up" format during prime time. I never watch the prison shows, but I would watch two hours of a news show that had some meat on its bones. Why not have a "week in review" show instead of sending us to prison? I also wish there were better coordination between shows. I don't need to see the same news on Rachel's show that I saw on Chris'. By the time Lawrence comes on we usually switch away to something else because it's just the same topics all over again.

I don't want MSNBC to give up on him yet! He can adjust!
But he might need a new producer. He rushes through topics and some that they pick are a waste of time.
It also goes against his hosting strengths when he does that light, fluffy internet/entertainment segment every night.
And please don't compare him to Chris Matthews.
Tweety is limited by his ego and SOOO wants to be like Will Macavoy from HBO's The Newsroom (which he watches) I feel bad for him.

(8,333 posts)Most people need something more than news and analysis to fill the hour. Hayes is smart but not terribly captivating. There has to be something about the host's personality to hold our interest. Rachel is thoughtful, graceful and can be very funny. Keith was an adorable jerk. Ed is a brash regular guy who is fiercely loyal to working class values--i love that about him, and it would be great to see him back at his old slot.
But I'd be over the moon if Thomas Roberts got the 8 pm slot. He has a reassuring presence, also funny, passionate and smart. The girl in me would tune in just to gaze at that handsome face. Sigh!
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)O'Reilly is the top cable 'news' show. In Chris timeslot, Billo wins cable news. Chris Hayes is a consistent second place, outpacing AC360 regularly and kicking the 'Morning Joe' MSNBC centerpiece show by over 100,000 viewers a day.
Hardly 'tanking'. And why use 9-11 data?
itsrobert
(14,157 posts)That's a morning time slot and Morning Joe's ratings have always tanked. You don't compare 8pm Primetime to 6am slot. I used the latest data. I wasn't aware the reason for Hayes tanking was because of 9/11.
Here's Mondays.
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/09/10/cable-news-ratings-for-monday-september-9-2013/201767/
As you can see he is the lowest rated show on MSNBC from 5ET to the end of the 10et hour (11pm). He is behind to AC360 in the money demo. And only slightly ahead of AC360 in overall viewers. Significant dropoff in ratings from Chris Matthews/Harball.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,245 posts)lightweight, and not the best fit for a show in MSNBC primetime. And besides that, MSNBC is only a player when there's an election cycle.
The real problem for MSNBC is that traditional Democratic constituencies which are younger, except the hardcore political junkies, don't sit around watching tv news. They get their news on the go, and not from the traditional sources. That's for old age homes.
whttevrr
(2,345 posts)And wondered what it was that was that makes him not as popular...
The word I came up with was pedantic... and then another one came up in my mind, condescending. It may very well be that he is one of the smartest people on tv, but it seems as if he tries to prove it to the viewer. And some of the things he explains are quite simple and well known. So it comes off as if he thinks his viewers are stupid. That kind of irks me.
On the flip side, when I watch Rachel Maddow I do not really get the impression that she thinks she is vastly more intelligent than her viewers(even though it is obvious that she is). She tends to talk to the viewer as if they were intelligent adults. When she speaks I immediately can see that she has a very good grasp on what it is that she is talking about. She seems very intelligent. It may very well be that she is one of the smartest people on tv, but it seems as if she would deny that out of humility. She seems to want to genuinely inform the viewer of something she noticed. She is like the nerd who says: "Did you see this? I didn't know this, but this is what I found out. What do you think?"
Hayes is more like: "Ha, look what I know... again."
itsrobert
(14,157 posts)I know Rachel and Hayes are both more intelligent than I. But Rachel doesn't treat her audience like they didn't get past the sixth grade.

(14,157 posts)Why is he down this week in September? I am afraid you are reading a story done by an MSNBC press release that ran with ratings for a couple days in early September during the Labor day week when other hosts are on vacation. And he is still not up on the former occupiers of the MSNBC 8pm timeslot Schultz and Olbermann. Not even close.
DirkGently
(12,151 posts)What's your angle here? Don't like the Syria coverage or something? It's a new show and MSNBC is reconfiguring its lineup. Therefore, the relevant news would be that last week was the show's best ever, not that Bill O'Reilly continues to be a juggernaut among the rightwing troglodytes of the world.
But instead you said "continues to tank," which implies the overall trend is down, the opposite of the truth.
That is a false implication. Why are you making it?
Nielsen returns have All In With Chris Hayes posting its best averages yet among total viewers and adults 25-54 -- excluding the breaking news boost from the Boston Marathon bombings (April 15). For the week of Aug. 26, and compared to the week prior, Hayes was up 71 percentto 224,000 viewers in the cable news network's targeted demographic and up 47 percent among total viewers with a nightly average of 772,000.
(snip)
All In heavily covered Syria and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington throughout the week and featured Newark, N.J., mayor and Senate candidate Cory Booker during Thursday's episode. The 8 p.m. show outperformed CNN competition in Anderson Cooper 360 (577,000 viewers, 170 adults 25-54) on all five nights -- though it still lagged behind cable news' reigning ratings champ, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly. The pundit was up himself, averaging 2.56 million viewers and 430,000 adults 25-54 to hold on to his status as the top broadcast of the week.
