...The Senate Banking Committee must approve Summers' potential nomination before it goes to the Senate for full confirmation, something that looks increasingly unlikely. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), and Jeff Merkley (Ore.) are expected to oppose Summers in committee.

(102,236 posts)I feel guilty that I am comparatively unscathed, frankly.... I never thought I'd live to see a repeat of the Big Thompson Flood of 1976, but this may be worse, or at least on a par.

(9,033 posts)I've heard that over and over this week.
You are the first to personally remember Big Thompson, as I do. I was a lifeguard at Boulder Reservoir that summer and every afternoon we would watch the thunderstorms come in. That Saturday there were three: one moving right along the Front Range from the south, another coming down from the north, and the third from the usual NW. They met over the mountains just NW of us; the sky was black as ink. We came to work the next morning--as usual bright and sunny with a blue sky--with news of the flash flood.
It was horrific. So is this, in a different way. That was an isolated thunderstorm over one drainage lasting for a few hours; this is a sub-tropical monsoon-type storm all along the Front Range, lasting for days.
It is unbelievable to me, I've never seen anything like it.
Stay safe.

(102,236 posts)Your memories brought back quite a few of my own... I actually went back to some old NBC newscasts from the time.... I rememer the horror that the numbers of dead were not immediately known, but emerged over days. The damage here is on par, for sure, but I hope the mortality will be far less.

(473 posts)will we find someone strong enough to take her place in the senate?

(59,503 posts)She is up in 2018 - so she could run in 2016 without giving up her seat - so only if she is elected would MA need a new Senator. We know exactly how that works since to Ma having 2 special elections since 2010!

Yellen would be the first female Fed chief and has been embraced by the left, perhaps because progressives find her more qualified but also because they just dont like Summers. This week, Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, came out against Summers, and an aide to the senator said he plans to send a letter to the White House by weeks end outlining his concerns with the controversial candidate.
I have strong reservations about Summers, Begich said. My view is based on the time that Ive been here, with the couple years that I worked with him, and I just didnt get a sense that he clearly understood what the middle class is going through, the struggles especially on the housing issue.
Some of us tried to push him to move into doing something to help a lot of these homeowners who are underwater, it came late in the game, Begich continued. I just didnt sense that he understood what the middle class is going through, and I didnt vote for Bernanke, and so Im kind of consistent.

(2,574 posts)And yes, I hope Tester's additional no vote is good news.
Appointing Summers, a major architect of the Wall Street Heist of the American economy, would achieve a certain criminal symmetry. It it also brings an obnoxious antiwomen symmetry as well, since Summers notoriety for discounting, marginalizing women would be rewarded by granting this arrogant Oaf a job for which Janet Y appears infinitely more qualified. Not a difficult distinction for JY, since Larry Summers track record screams that Summers has been wrong about everything economic...from repealing Glass Steagall to the necessary size of the stimulus. He couldn't even run Harvard without losing them billions of dollars in investments and slurring women scientists...at a prestigious meeting of (male and female) distinguished scientists BTW
Summers is Obama's Peter Principle Pal, his personal Bull in the China Closet of the fragile American Recovery; Obama's going to fight fiercely and blindly for his confirmation. So it would be terrific if Summers got cut as early as the Banking Committee vote. It'll ultimately depend on what the PTB on Wall Street want; they're the ueber boss/campaign donors to most on this Committee.

(36,745 posts)Mr. Geithner at least has experience deal with crises. Summers only has experience in creating them.
Geithner also was NY FRB president, so he has Fed experience.

(23,097 posts)Of course Repugs could still mess us up and support him, but that would mean supporting something Obama wants and you know how they hate that! Of course, I do think that big money is what they mainly support, and that means they probably will vote for Summers.
I wouldn't even mind if they filibustered the nomination is they can't stop it in committee. Stopping it in committee, is the very best option - if this is even formally proposed. I'm hoping it's just a lead balloon, but not looking that way.
